There's nothing wrong with knowing what you want and being honest. Honest replies are great but you can sugar coat them a little surely?
I didn't give him a caning (no one did) and not one word of my objective response was meant with any sarcasm.
You seem to be confusing straightforward and direct with mean/sarcastic.
