slvemike4u -> Chemical weapons... (12/5/2012 5:33:02 PM)

NBC news is reporting that American Officials are saying the Assad has loaded chemical weapons onto bombs and missiles and that the Syrian military is merely awaiting the final order from Assad to use these weapons against his own citizens.
The U.S. military and intelligence community is scrambling,both to put together strike packages and to gather as much intelligence as possible so as to refine those same packages.

Well a catholic priest reportedly said, "Kill them all and god will choose his" at the sack of Jerusalem by the crusaders.

Considering the problems in Lebanon, Syria, Israel, and the rest of the Middle East, I if Assad gives the order to use chemical weapons, the west should nuke the whole region, god will sort em out.

Please note the sarcasm

slvemike4u -> RE: Chemical weapons... (12/5/2012 6:07:18 PM)

At this point whether or not he uses the weapons isn't the sole issue. The fact is he has put them into play,which by definition means he has mixed the chemicals(these weapons are typically stored in an inert form,in other words not mixed)so now we have actual sarin....in less than secure circumstances...in a part of the world where such players as Al Qaeda are present.
In other words this is a situation that we,as a nation can not in any way tolerate....we will have to go in,or otherwise insure the complete destruction of these agents.
There is no other move for the President.

Sad to say, but he's right. This goes to show that our hand is often forced by circumstances: but you know the Radicals will howl if Obama takes any action, even though he had to.

And I bet NONE of these weapons of them came into Syria from Iraq in the winter and early spring of 2003

I'll take that bet....and since you seem so intent on inserting revisionist history in some lame assed attempt to redeem Bush's failed policy of invasion....you go about PROVING they did.
Otherwise STFU,that is a battle long dead and over....we are discussing a problem in the here and now.

I bet our fantastic Vice President is on top of the situation.

Anyone else have anything relevant to add to the conversation,or should we just continue with the remarks from the insipid and extremely irrelevant ?

*blinks* say what?

So let me get this straight. You are suddenly concerned because a country which has the ability to make things like Sarin gas has admitted to actually doing so. Therefor, you feel that now they've admitted such the terrorists are somehow more likely to get their hands on some? And you feel that situation forces our hand? Wow.

I see it a bit differently. I get it that nasty things are being brewed up all over the world all the time... most of said nasty stuff is being brewed up by the good 'ol US of A. So I don't see this information as any radical call to arms.

DaNewAgeViking -> RE: Chemical weapons... (12/5/2012 11:59:45 PM)

One problem I see is the prospect of Assad giving some of that Sarin gas to Hamas or Al Qaeda out of simple revenge, especially if his regime does fall. This could get very ugly very fast, especially if the terrorists use it to spread the conflict beyond the Middle East.

Yeah, wouldn't it be a kick in the ass if our Fuck Up In Chief sent in troops to go after these WMD's and couldn't find them.

Let me help you "get it straight" ....a nation has now mixed and,to an extant ,loosened the controls on one of the worlds most dangerous toxins.
Said nation has a wide collection of rogue actors present...such as Al Qeada.
Said nation has taken this provocative act as a preparatory step to using this toxin on it'sown citizens ,thereby committing a civilian death count of untold numbers.

Yeah I see this as a radical call to arms.
The fact that you don't says soooo much about you,and brings so many words to mind,words such as ignorant,uninformed,clueless et al.

Good thing that everything so far about his Presidency leads us to believe that he will;
a)wait till he has the correct intelligence to act:
b) make sure that every other avenue of reaction has been exhausted prior to committing and :
c) use the right,by that I mean proportional(in other words he will not invade the whole fucking country),force in the measured action he has decided to take.

All of the above is,of course,exactly the opposite of what his predecessor would have done [8|]

Thaz -> RE: Chemical weapons... (12/6/2012 5:42:56 AM)

Troublesome situation allright. If the US of A and its Nato allies act then it will be seen as provocation by a good half of the Arab world.
If the US or Nato DONT act lots of people could die, in agony.

Big question is what do the Russians and Chineese think about it all. They have their own intell sources, rather good ones, focused on that part of the world and will be no more in favor of chemical weapon use on civ pop than we are.

If they are convinced of the reality of the situation they might be Ok with NATO unleashing it's airpower and capitilising on the aftermath.

But I fear a large number of civilians might have to die before that happens. We shall see.

Peace be with everyone and especially Ash and all the other people living under this shadow.

No one is forcing anyone to intervene. If the US intervenes it's because it wants to and sees it as in its own interest.

Let's be honest, the west hasn't intervened in Syria because if it beheads the Assad regime it might be faced with a radical popular government in Syria that will tow the line even less than Assad has in the past or it might disintergrate into warring factions which will affect the entire ME.

Taking sides in the ME and bankrolling one side and not the other just extends the conflict and inflames the whole region, like it has done between Israel and Palestine.

The ME is fucked up because the west has been interfering, choosing sides, double dealing, back stabbing and invading ever since the fall of the Ottoman Empire.

China will pay through the nose for resources which will drive oil prices up skyhigh in Europe and the US. Most of western Europe has intergrated transport systems with spare capacity and have high taxes on oil thye could reduce to help keep fuel prices down. From what I understand, the US doesn't have high taxes on fuel it can reduce. All the same, high oil prices will be painful all over the west but countries like Germany who have been putting a lot of research into alternative energies might find it is a boon to those industries.

If Obama was Bush:

Credible reports of wmd prep in Syria
Suppress that and instead play up vague indications of al queda in lebanon
Invade lebanon hand it over to iran
Drive us into debt
Create more problems than you solved
Crash economy

Should we do nothing,and Assad actually uses these weapons on his own populace,perhaps even in border areas,creating a spillover effect(thereby causing reactions from and spreading the conflict to,his neighbors)I want you to be sure and not come here bemoaning the lack of action and blaming "the west" for the body count [8|]
