Aswad -> Corruption Perceptions Index 2012 (12/5/2012 6:11:56 PM)

So, the numbers are in from Transparency International, and the rankings are as follows, with higher numbers being less corrupt, in essence:

≥90: Denmark, Finland, New Zealand.
≥85: Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland, Australia, Norway.
≥80: Canada, Netherlands, Iceland, Luxembourg.
≥75: Germany, Hong Kong, Barbados, Belgium.
≥70: Japan, UK, USA, Chile, Uruguay, Bahamas, France, St. Lucia.
≥65: Austria, Ireland, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Botswana, Spain.
≥60: Estonia, Bhutan, Portugal, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent / Grenadines, Slovenia, Taiwan, Cape Verde, Israel.
≥55: Dominica, Poland, Malta, Mauritius, S. Korea, Brunei, Hungary.
≥50: Costa Rica, Lithuania, Rwanda, Georgia, Seychelles, Bahrain.

If your country wasn't one of the 53 best, or if you're curious, the whole thing can be found here (link).

Anyone surprised by their own country, or do these rankings match your experiences?

IWYW,
— Aswad.

I was wondering if there was a similar survey of state by state comparisons, and I found this.

We shouldn't forget this is a perception of level of corruption in a country, which is basically how good their institutions are perceived and not the honesty of politicians. I have lived in five different countries in the last 25 years and in ALL the countries the politicians have been unremittingly poisonous snakes and my suspicion was, a lot of their dishonesty and corrupt dealings remain hidden because of a tame and friendly media. Certainly, as we have seen in Britain over the last few years, every time a corner of the carpet is lifted up, cockroaches are scurrying and trying to hide from the light. I've been saying for 25 years, the British establishment and political class are rotten to the core, scandals over the last few years have proved it. That doesn't make Britain more corrupt than other countries, I've lived in a couple of countries in the top ten and my perception was they were no better than Britain.

What on earth is happening with those F states? Are they run by Martian paedophiliac mass-murdering Mafiosi ivory smugglers or something?

One thing I noticed is that it isn't a red state/blue state thing. Bad ones, good ones and average ones are pretty much evenly distributed.

Well I can't speak for the rest of the country, but my guess is Detroit weighs heavily in Michigans score.
