Tuesday, the Senate had the chance to be world leaders when they were asked to ratify the UN Convention of Civil Rights for Persons with disabilities. Sadly, this treaty failed in a 61-38 vote, 5 votes short of the required 2/3 majority to pass a treaty.

The treaty was negotiated by G.H.W. Bush, endorsed by John McCain and Bob Dole (father of the American with Disabilities Act). It was signed by the UN General Assembly in 2006 and has since been ratified by 126 countries. The Convention aims to “promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.” In addition to outlining basic principles for fair and equitable treatment of the disabled, it established a committee of human rights experts tasked with monitoring progress and issuing non-binding recommendations pursuant to those goals.

But there were some right wing conspiracy theories surrounding this convention. Rick Santorum wrote in The Blaze that the Convention could “potentially eradicate parental rights for the education of children with disabilities” and “allow our beliefs and values to be outsourced to outside entities that may not always have our best interests in mind.”

If I'm reading that right, Santorum is claiming that the treaty would allow the UN to dictate law, even though our ADA is stronger than the UN treaty. And that the US should be telling the UN how to protect the rights of the poor, not the other way around. Somewhere, Rick forgot just who is responsible for negotiating this treaty in the first place. Basically, he's against it because Obama signed it.

No Erie,in this case I don't think their hatred of Obama had anything to do with it.
Santorum and the other right wing assholes rejected this treaty(heard him of Hannity the day before yesterday beating the drums about this)due to their totally irrational conspiracy belief that the U.N would somehow superced our sovereignty
An echo,if you will,of the John Birch society...one for the new millennium. .What a sad bunch of assholes.

If Shrub was involved, it must have been evil.

"even though our ADA is stronger than the UN treaty"

Is this just a variation of the Kyoto/Conference On The Rights of Women shell game then?

Where nations with poor human rights records draw up a position that is weaker than the US, and play semantics to avoid enforcing it on themselves?
And then use American objections to signing a flawed document, to whip up a smokescreen of finger-pointing to hide their own failures?

How does Bush 43 fit in, Rich? The OP says that Bush 41 negotiated the treaty. It doesn't mention 43 at all.

Hmm. I've only ever heard "Shrub" used for Bush 43. I believe it was a Molly Ivins coinage.

Is she one of the great lib thinkers? I'm way out of practice with this stuff. Stalinist, or Trotskyite?

It's a play on Bush. I know libs are required to use hate-speech whenever referencing the evil republinazis, but I'm still not really comfortable with it, and went mild to start with.

ROFL... no one said anything about being a model. You do love putting words into people's mouths... typically the wrong ones. But, hey, you are very good at that.

Then what do you care about what I believe will be required of me, now that I'm a lib, Tazzy? Since you seem to have taken personal offense, how could anyone not assume you took the remark to be about you personally, and implying that you are somehow my model?

Have a nice night, however you choose to spend it.

A lib in name only... DINO... lol

Now, you are asking us to assume you have flipped sides... not gonna happen. Yet you insist that all libs are here to bad mouth Republicans. I have called some liars. I have called some idiots. Yet I have never called Bush "shrub"... sorta makes your assumptions a lie.

Yes, I have taken personal offence when someone touts a blatant lie as the "truth".

As opposed to the Peace-and-Love-speech of Rush and Hannity and Coulter.

Let's get back to the 'kinder, gentler,' more sane, less politically hostile ways, like we used to be. Like what Coulter and Rush and Hannity tell us.

I'm sure you're more comfortable with that, and your personal comfort level, whatever the country is engaged in, is what matters, no matter otherwise the actual warfare upon the world and upon its own citizens.

Sleep well.

I am sure of what is on record in application of political discourse, hate-speech being the start, end, an foundation of any of your 'contributions' here.

Many fine examples from yourself in that regard. I can see why you consider those interlopers (certainly in comparison to yourself) as amateurs, now.

You did catch me out, though. I can see now how you took offense at my associating yourself with lesser hate mongerers.

Who needs Rush or Coulter or Hannity when you have such demonstrated ability to out-do all three of them for sheer lunacy all at once, just by yourself.

I think I saw Gary Trudeau using it in Doonesbury in the early '90s.
As you say though, that one never really stuck to Bush Prime and was used on the Chimp a lot more.
