I think this says it all.

Aylee -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 5:21:33 PM)

An entitlement is a guarantee of access to benefits based on established rights or by legislation.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/entitlement

Umm. . . yeah, Social Security is an entitlement.

kdsub -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 5:32:59 PM)

It should be called an annuity and not an entitlement.

Butch

jlf1961 -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 5:33:25 PM)

Well considering I paid into the system for 25 years, the Republicans better keep their fucking hands off it.

TheIslandofO -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 6:04:35 PM)

I agree it is a insurance /annuity program, since we are required to pay into the system for the entire life span of the program. However it is a very poor failure at best,it leaves the taxpayers holding the bag for it's short comings while the crooks raid it.
The problem in a nut shell is the Congress and politicians in general refuse to live up to their obligations and promises they make.

Either way the whole shit is going to fall and when it does the rest of the cards in this house of cards will fall with it.

Chaos is coming hard n fast , the sheeple will not see it until the first crash then panic. The rich see the hand writing on the wall and are moving assets all over the place to survive.None of which will help them.

You would be better off placing those premiums as a individual into a blind trust account same goes for medicare and letting it build for the entire time of your life.

It can be fixed and made solvent, however none of the PTB want that. The entire bullshit going on is just more smoke n mirrors.

How can anyone live on 2500 dollars a month or less when your out of pocket costs for all the things that you have to pay for eat up most of your SS income.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKE, THE GIG IS UP. UNTIL THE GENERAL POPULATION UNDERSTANDS THEY HAVE BEEN FLEECED BY THE ELITES, UNIONS,CEO'S AND THEIR ELECTED OFFICIALS NONE OF THE SOLUTIONS IN THE WORLD WILL FIX THE PROBLEM.

Pst.... the people here know that.

TheHeretic -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 6:21:21 PM)

Social Security was established with a start age past the average life expectancy of the time.

I agree, and there are many of us that won't be going quietly into the night, if attempts to raise the age to receive social security, or a few of the other proposals are seriously considered..

lovmuffin -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 8:52:39 PM)

Hyperinflation (likely to happen) will kill the whole thing along with everything else.

Well, granted, the inevitable inflation (hyper, or merely insanely high) IS going to wipe out the life saving of the baby boomers, but it will also cut that nasty national debt right back down to size.

This might be true, but social security will be the LAST thing to fall, so by then who will even care?
lol

At the average rate of return on my SS investment over the last 50 years I have been contributing not one tax dollar should need to go to my support through any reasonable or unreasonable life span. Abuse of the system is the problem not the system itself. So in my opinion the average lifespan has nothing to do with it. I believe that if administered as designed 65 years will still work just fine. We just need to get by this crisis then keep their fingers out of the pot.

Why do you think it will be the last thing to go, Mari? Those IOUs we've been putting in the trust fund are going to fall in value, just like the T-Bills in the Chinese vaults.

IF the house of cards FALL, this "guarantee" will probably go LAST because I believe we will have the most people raising hell, and protesting the most.
The greasiest wheel usually gets the oil.
I am willing to protest this every weekend for a long time.
Times like this I love living 30 minutes from Washington D.C.
Rich, do you honestly think people are going to "go-along with or take just anything"?

Many of those affected by other cuts might not take it to the streets, but many are going to take anything related to social security to their Congressperson and to the streets.
Hard to go against seniors/those of us a little more than "concerned"/ and many others on a REAL warpath.

Bring it!
lol

TheHeretic -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 9:58:48 PM)

Mari, they aren't going to take it away. It simply isn't going to do anything like keep up with inflation. It will be like those folks who go down to apply for food stamps, and get a grant of $14 a month.

Rich, I know damn well, they aren't going "to take IT away".

I have not typed anything regarding them "taking it away".
I said, that there are many people {myself included}, that are very willing
to protest most of the proposed changes to social security.

It's that simple.

meatcleaver -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 10:08:33 PM)

Politicians are just using the current crisis to redistribute money from the general population to the rich and the corporations.

However, people vote for this shit so I suppose they only have themselves to blame.

TheHeretic -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 10:08:39 PM)

Mari, nobody was protesting in the streets when they already made the most important change - how inflation gets calculated. NOT changing Social Security is what brings it down.

It's late, I am heading to bed.
We all get to pick our causes/battles in life.
You do what you need to do, and I will do what I need to do.
I am just telling you what I/and many others are prepared to do and will be doing.
To each their own.
Peace

TheHeretic -> RE: Social Security is an entitlement? (12/6/2012 10:14:08 PM)

Sleep well, and Happy Friday, Mari.

We'll pick it up again, I'm sure. [:)]
