LookieNoNookie -> When did your Mom get batshit? (12/6/2012 4:30:58 PM)

My Mom's at the funny stage of "early batshit".

She does shit that just fucking makes me laugh my ass off....she's 78....

I just sent her an email:

"Mom....I'm gonna get my place (5 acres) all set up, max out the two rental houses on the property, get it all dolled up, get it ready for sale for late 2014 (she currently lives in a very nice condo on the water...like....she can walk 9 feet and dip her toes in) and I'm gonna start looking for a place with a nice Mother in law kind of thing on a lake so you can have a place where I can keep an eye on you (I'm thinking...yeah....she's gonna be batshit...but hell...she can still cook! My Momma didn't raise no fool you know!)..."

So I'm wondering....asking....when did your Mom go batshit?

Mine is now going to the gas station (among dozens of other hilarious and amusing things), sticking the fuel device in, going in to get coffee (leaving her credit card on top of the gas pump...not having stuck it into the computer of course), coming back out to the car, pulling the gas pump thingie away and driving off (with her credit card still left on the top of the gas pump and....never having pumped any gas) and wondering why several miles later she's still at 1/4 tank or less.

So...again....when did you realize your Mom was batshit and....as importantly....what are the signs leading from...."funnier than shit" to....

Can't handle shit.

?

She's still pretty much on it....but I'm seeing signs...and I'm thinking...."we're probably 3 - 6 years away from when I can roll her for a couple hundred grand".

(JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!)

Seriously...I am wondering....what are the signs? When do you start thinking...."this ain't funny anymore"?

Umm about 3 years ago? Then doc fixed the meds (thank god) & now she will only sporatically yell at me for things did as a teen when I was discussing gluten free stuffing.

There Is Nothing Wrong With My Mom!

OsideGirl -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/6/2012 7:42:30 PM)

My Mom isn't. But, she's only 67.

Just0Plain0Mike -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/6/2012 8:25:31 PM)

My Mom is still good, but then she's only 63. However I went through this with my wife. She had breast cancer that spread to her brain (and later all over) which prompted surgery and whole brain radiation. It didn't have any significant effect right away, but within a year or so she got bad. I was told that it basically aged her brain 20ish years. It lead to something reminiscent of senile dementia or alzheimers. She became paranoid and delusional. Would lose time. At one point she was convinced that I (and possibly Daisy) was going to murder her. This lead to a really fun visit by the police when she called and told them to hurry that I was downstairs but was going to kill her when I came back. Meanwhile, I'm downstairs making her breakfast and answer the door with a knife in my hand. It's one of those things I can laugh about now, but if either of those cops had been a bit more trigger happy, it wouldn't have been good.

I wish you luck with your Mom, I hope your road isn't as bumpy as mine was.

Mike

Mine is 77 and she's kind of at the tipping point of early batshit.

However, she's always been kind of wacky, so this isn't (yet) a big departure.

Mom is 77, and has lived in my house for the last 3 years. Since she moved in she developed abdominal cancer, went through chemo, broke her hip, had surgery to remove a 3 cm stone from her kidney, and is now dealing with emphysema. She is getting quite forgetful, and tires easily. She can still beat me regularly at Scrabble, is an inveterate reader, and gets out a few times a week.
I don't think she has ever put her own gas in, and uses credit cards infrequently and reluctantly.

Gawdamn.....Bud....you are an amazing person....all of you who care for an elder parent are as well.....I do mean that.

I haven't done that yet...thankfully Mom is (batshit but) still somewhat capable. I think I still have 4 - 8 years.

I guess the one thing that's really important to me is....once you have Mom living with you...how do you hide all the hookers and itinerant transvestites?

Do you have a separate entrance?

Maybe like a separate garage entry with a private entry code?

LaTigresse -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/8/2012 8:24:08 AM)

As far as I know, my mother was batshit long before I came along. Like early teens or something. Not sure what her current status is. 1,000 miles is a very good thing.

littlewonder -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/8/2012 8:27:21 AM)

My mom has always been that way. Ask anyone who knows her.

igor2003 -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/8/2012 9:04:24 AM)

--FR--

"Back in the day" when either my sister or I would bring someone new home to meet the folks we, of course, would later ask them what they thought of our parents. In general the answer was almost always the same..."Your dad is really nice...but your mom is kind of weird!" Sadly, 40-some years later she still hasn't grown out of it.

kiwisub12 -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/8/2012 12:10:50 PM)

My mum is 83, had a total hip last year, drove two hours to be with my sister who had emergency surgery and needed some to stay with her and recently bought her first house - because she was worried that if she got to where she couldn't drive she would be a burden on her kids, if she stayed on the farm.
I'm going home next year so that she will have someone to drive her to therapy after her total knee.
I don't think the woman plans of going batshit any time in the near future! [:D]

littlewonder -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/8/2012 2:20:48 PM)

My mom is 72 and while she's never had a cell in her brain to think, I'm always amazed that she's not really all that ill yet. Last year she quit smoking and drinking and has lost lots of weight according to my sisters.

But as for her mental faculties lol.....When I was a kid, I rarely brought anyone to my home because of her. She's just beyond looney.

Now my dad before he died was a great guy; never went to school, taught himself algebra and geometry, to play the guitar, draw and so many other things. You could have a real conversation with him about everything under the sun and he'd do it the entire time with a smile on his face and never a loud voice. Up until the day he died he still all his faculties. He was 68 when he passed away.

I'm always jealous though when others I know have such great moms. I wouldn't trade my dad for anything but my mom? Yeah....I'll take offers [8D]

KyttynTheMynx -> RE: When did your Mom get batshit? (12/8/2012 2:46:49 PM)

My mom has been kinda nutso ever since I can remember. Always been pretty forgetful. Within the last year or two, it has gotten worse, but not to the point where she needs to be constantly supervised, thank goodness. I can only handle one deteriorating parent at a time. First time I realized something wasnt "right" was the day she set a frying pan on fire when all she was trying to do was boil water. The pan was on fire at least 2 minutes before she realized. Luckily nothing else caught. I was about...8 then? That isnt a frequent habit, and her accidents since have been less dangerous, but I have noticed that lately she is telling me more and more about her losing her debit card (luckily, only in the car or house) or misplacing a phone that is actually stuck in her bra, or something like that.
