In some cases it is not always so slow to occur. I took my mom (at 70) in to live with me because my out-of-town sibling came to visit her and complained mom had been 'off'. I then tested her memory, then had the doctor test it (it is a fairly simple series of questions they ask). She was losing it.
Within a few weeks my mom went from that stage to insisting that my apartment was 'hers' and I should start paying her rent or I am booted. She locked me out of my own apartment several times when I went downstairs for 10 minutes to do laundry. She literally did NOT believe even my own apt. lease contract that I showed her and insisted it was a fraud, even her own brother and his wife could not convince her. She soon became violent (from the confusion). It was a horrible ending to her living there in which forced me to get her bumped up the list for emergency admission to a nursing home. It was quite stressful to attempt to deal with her alone. It ended with the police being called because she was throwing things at me (my uncle called them while I was on the phone with him). Uhhg, imagine, your mom being hauled off by cops like that. She previously was never violent a day in her life.
She soonafter and still doesn't know who her own children are, nor where she is, why she is there etc. Please take her to the family doc asap to have him admister the test. Also remember that these little things she forgets soon become more drastic and dangerous to herself and others (fire, flood, explosions, hit and run, etc) and you may want to soon exclude her from driving also. Since Alzheimer's is hereditary her sister (years previous) had it, took off in the car and kept driving in a blizzard, ended up in a hotel (who knows how) because she was lost meanwhile the tv stations had bulletins looking for her because she shouldn't have even been allowed keys for this reason to begin with.

*they now have (quite expensive) drugs (pftt I doubt they work) that they administer to prevent further memory decline (from the point you begin) but they have no effect on the damage already done, so check on that with the doc.
*the doctors advise that smoking, drinking and heredity are common causes., consider those when mentioning the situation with a health pro.
*my stubborn mother also insisted long ago that there will be NO need for a power of Attourney because she will croak in her sleep someday. BULLSHIT, be sure to get that in order to save future heartache. Trust me.
*she also insisted that being mentally active was important (crosswords, reading, etc) but even those things didn't save her., but do try to insist your parent continues those.
