I know all about that, and the cotton industry too found hemp fabric a "threat" to them.. all of that is why it became illegal and why the US govt is nutz to keep it illegal.. but that is exactly what they are gonna do, no matter what the states do, no matter that they make fairly harmless pot smokers criminals (that are a cash cow for the prison industry).. I dunno, there are aspects of the US that I can not tolerate.. its a country that shoots itself in the foot on so many issues, the fighting between the Rs & Ds, political corruption, turning into a police state, taking away civil liberties, States vs the Feds, bailing out banksters instead of throwing them in jail, etc, etc.. which makes it not a very attractive country to me... Actually I think that the Federal government will decriminalize marijuana when the promise of the possible tax revenues outweighs the cost of enforcing laws that many LEO's think are stupid, unofficially of course. I mean it costs more to enforce marijuana laws than it would generate if legalized. Pot smokers are not known for violence, robbery, burglary or any other serious crime to support their habit. I mean, pot is the cheapest illegal drug available.

Breaks out out two thc lollypops out of his 6 pack. Watches tv and laugh his high ass off until he falls asleep. Much as they found out in prohibition, they can't fight the majority of the states. And many are tired of putting people in jail for marijuana possession.

I disagree.. it should be legal but the Feds are the Feds and they will keep throwing pot smokers in jail, no matter what LEOs personally think or the various States do.. And the govt has done a good job of brainwashing the majority of voters and sucked them into believing in the War on Drugs.. Its an issue that does not personally affect me tho (since I dont partake) so what happens or doesnt happen doesnt really concern me.. I have my opinions but thats it..

Prohibition is a more apt analogy than many: aren't your country's (ludicrously draconian) drugs laws largely the work of former liquor enforcers who were desperate to find a new gig when the Volstead act was repealed?

In part, it absolutely was a jobs program. It really escalated under Nixon, though, as a way to criminalize the youth culture of the late 60's, which was scaring the hell out of old people.
