You guys are not the market for electric cars. California and other major metropolitan cities where commutes are relatively short distances and second cars to more educated and affluent buyers.

In addition, those same areas are undergoing a shift in how people own and operate cars. Ride sharing aps, zip car style short term rentals and the like are growing,in importance. Enough so that bmw and others are exploring, the market as they see the future.

yeah, zip cars & other versions of the same idea.. but they are regular gas cars, not electric, not that i have ever seen..

and sure, change is coming but it might take another 20 years to see any serious shift (if gas prices increased dramatically & continually, then maybe sooner).. my ex when i first met him was trying to get people to convert vehicles to natural gas (or propane) but few people were interested (gas was high priced and the numbers made sense).. but vehicles ran like shite on the stuff, too many bugs & problems.. And that is why i am not keen on hybrids and whatever "eco" thing car manufacturers throw out on the market.. (Ford just had to recall vehicles with their "eco" thingie).. And change starts with a trickle and builds over time as more people decide to get on board.. and usually prices have to come down also and the product proven to meet advertising claims..

I dont mind being an "early adopter" with some products but I dont wanna be used as a guinea pig experiment to find the bugs for manufacturers in a rush to capture market share..

If your electricity comes from coal or oil, I don't really see the where it's perfect solution.

As for the hybrids, I was not pleased when Master told me about the class he took to repair hybrids. If they are working near the batteries: The first guy wears four pairs of gloves. Nytrile, cotton, rubber and leather in hopes of not conducting electricity. A second guy stands behind him with a fiberglass hook, so he can pull the first guy's dead body off the batteries in the case of making a connection.

Somebody was bullshitting. While the batteries do push a lot of amps the voltage is low and almost any decent insulator is sufficient to protect a person. People work barehanded safely around much more dangerous electrical equipment every day. the big key is to wear insulated shoes so there isn't a low resistance path to ground through the body.

I guess I am not sure what "low voltage" means. If you read this link, http://www.autoserviceprofessional.com/article/91647/Electronic-air-conditioning-An-overview-of-systems-found-in-today-s-hybrid-vehicles?Page=1 even the A/C compressor runs at 200+ volts. I guess compared to a couple of KVs, this is not bad, but it is ample voltage to make the use of a curling iron unnecessary. And if you read Toyota's dismantling procedure they seem quite concerned themselves https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=11&cad=rja&ved=0CEcQFjAAOAo&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftechinfo.toyota.com%2FtechInfoPortal%2Fstaticcontent%2Fen%2Ftechinfo%2Fhtml%2Fprelogin%2Fdocs%2Fpriuscdisman.pdf&ei=u3vFUPjoA8mpqwGMiYDoCA&usg=AFQjCNGDf6EEzDPu-q9h--glYZwn51VlNQ

Since the Insight, we have had what most of us would consider high voltage inside vehicles (~200V). While it might not require 13 sets of gloves and a guy with a hook behind you to collect the dead body, those battery packs have enough juice that at that voltage, they will not only cook one's Goose, they will turn it into Crispy Duck special #5.

I am not an owner of a magic crystal ball and hence I cannot foretell the future. Maybe it will be electric cars in their current form, maybe it will be fuel cell vehicles with electric motors or some sort of a Hydrogen car, but it is a good bet that 200 years from now we will not have cars with internal combustion engines like the ones we have today. Then again, in 200 years, I won't care. For what happens between now and then, we will have to wait and see.

I am not sure it will be a market only evolution. I remember reading (as someone eluded to) that many countries in the EU coaxed by the coal loving Geeeermans, lowered taxes on diesel to help promote it's use (causing the EU to run at a Diesel fuel deficit as I understand it). Here in the US, now that we have switched to ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) the economics have not worked out to the favor of diesels especially as GDIs (Gasoline Direct Injection) and Miller cycle engines are re-examined. With combustion models getting better, the invested infrastructure, and their simplicity compared to hybrids, ICE vehicles are not yet ready to give up the spirit.

That is what I think, but YMMV,

T-

The Prius battery pack pushes 144 volts. To require protetion of the sort claimed, multiple layers of gloves etc., would require much higher voltage, 10's of kvolts at least. Like I said the amperage is high enough to be worrisome if you aren't taking basic precautions but as someone who worked around 300+ volt systems at multiple amps the precautions actually needed do not include gloves at all nor a fiberglass pole.
