This Fall and Winter I've started branching out and attending a few different munches across my home town, and I can't help but notice that that the mix is rather more, well, balanced, than expected. There are still more men than women, more subs than doms, but the ratio in both categories seems far less, well, skewed, and there also seem to many more folks somewhere in between. ( I've found a much, much higher percentage of switches than I'd ever suspect were out there. )

Going on Collarme and other online haunts, I'd expect a busy munch to be almost entirely made out of sub guys and for dom women to be somewhat mythical creatures, reportedly seen once through the mist and thereafter inconclusively real, like Bigfoot. Instead I've actually met about half a dozen, about half of which are ( egads ) single.

Now this has no personal relevance to my own searches, but what it does make me question is: which more accurately reflects the true demographics of the, um, alternatively inclined, who shows up at munches or who shows up online?

I think, in person,it is highly dependent on the demographics of the area you live in. I also think the more serious minded are more likely to go to "in person" activities.

When I used to attend munches about 10 years ago or so, it was always mostly made up of male subs and femdommes. These days I would have no clue.

OsideGirl and I have swapped notes about this. She said that in her area, there's still ten times as many men as women at events. Here, there's a pretty even mix, maybe a few more women.

That said, the majority of folks are maledom/femsub. The few straight male subs generally have to accept female switches for Dommes. More gay and genderfluid men than here. More littlegirls searching for Daddies.

Scenes tend to have the makeup of those who run them. Some cities only have one or two munches. Here we even have littles and furry munches. The makeup tends to be skewed towards men but not badly. I just started a fourmet munch, so far I am the only guy, lol.

I think it depends on how easy it is to find them. Around here the pickings were slim so we had a mix of mostly fem subs and switches for a long time until dominant males started peeking in and in general the median age was around 45. Now the stats are highly skewed toward those under 35, and people are more likely to be fluid in their choice of sub, dom, top or bottom. There are still the original core members but they were outnumbered long ago by TNG.

I just attended our community play party last night. Demographics are different here. The only female Dominants were Myself and the gal that I mentor. We also had two female switches, one of whom was in Domme mode last night. That was compared to eight sub/bottom males and a couple of male switches that prefer bottom. The other twenty or so folks were all male D/f sub.

Yup, in SoCal it's 10:1 male Doms to female subs. It's more 15:1 or 20:1 male sub to female Domme.

At the LA social held at the Sportsman's Lodge we would get around 200 people in the summer months. It was held out doors near the pool with a tent and patio space. In the back corner, the would be a group of 15 to 20 Dommes that would sit and hold court. Then there would be a few more scattered through out the crowd.

Here, the one thing that stands out recently is that there are lots and lots of young folks. TNG is rapidly becoming the largest sector of the local group

Maybe. But then maybe not. We have zero interest in most events, or the people hosting or at said events. We can get our kink on just fine with out going to events.

Now there's a few we love and go to. But they're few and far between.

Some years ago I got invited to a local munch, the list of regulars were all male tops, not one woman. Needless to say, I did not feel okay joining it.

I wonder how good the representation of the local community is on FL or Collarme. Do the regulars at events generally have an online presence too? Or are there are lot of people to be met in person that have no online presence? Maybe they are still relying on mimeographed newsletters and phone trees to find out about the next munch or fetishy event.

I personally prefer tribal drum...easier to catch up while working

Around here, I think we have a fairly close balance of males to females, but we also have quite a few who are much more fluid. There still probably is a slightly higher 'submissive' female number than the other other various 'types' but in recent years, my local scene has gotten a lot more variety which is way cool and makes me very happy.

I don't think you can ever compare online to local public communities. One's local public community isn't even representative of the amount of kink in one's area; it's only representative of those people locally who actually want to participate in public events and get togethers. I've met lots and lots of people who are some of the kinkiest people ever....but yet have no desire to ever go to a munch or something similar.

I don't think you're going to get a single answer to that question. It really depends on where you are.

In the city where I currently live, the scene is dominated by male Doms and female subs. And the TNG group is extremely large and growing. When I first moved here it was an older group, dominated by people age 35+. But now, the TNG aged members are definitely the largest group.

In the previous city that I lived in, the group was dominated by female Dommes. Surprisingly, there were few male subs despite the abundance of female Dommes.

Based on what others have written, it sounds like there is a lot of variety from place to place.

There used to be a SoCal room on AOL and pretty much everyone knew each other in real life. When that room died, the attendance at the socials dropped.

Online it's possible to present yourself not as you are but as you imagine yourself to be, or even wish yourself to be, it seems obvious to me "true demographics" would be better represented by who shows up at munches, play parties and other real life events.

I've never seen a particularly good study on the demographics of people who engage in kink. And kink is so broad it probably would be hard to even define what "alternatively inclined" means.

Online you'll get a lot of fakes, or people who are trying out an identity that may not end up fitting them.

Only a very small percentage of the people who engage in BDSM go to munches, so the demographics of munches may only reflect the type of people who go to munches, a particular area, or the specific munch itself.

I doubt anyone can give you even a hazy answer to this that is anything more than their limited, personal experience.
