Hiya everyone, I have a quick question. Does anyone have any patterns or designs for sensory deprivation hoods?

I've used over the last few months two store bought ones and though they are great for the outlay (roughly £50), I've been thinking about how I could make one myself that would incorporate a set of headphones into the hood itself (i.e. be built into the design) and a hole or something similar for my hair (when it is tied back). I'm fairly handy with fabrics and thinner leather and a sewing machine, so think I could probably pull it off, but any help with leads on tried and tested designs/patterns would be really useful. Thanks!

This man makes some amazing things AND he makes freely available his patterns: http://fetishleathercrafter.blogspot.com/

As far as earphones - I would seriously recommend separate earbuds. My slave wears them under her hood and all she hears is my voice over brown noise (I like to keep her free from noise distractions) and the environment inside the hood means she goes through about a set of headphones every 4 months or so. But if you insist I would recommend wiring in some headphones that are designed to fit inside of a motorcycle helmet such as these for example http://www.amazon.com/Stereo-Motorcycle-Speaker-Headphones-Control/dp/B0093E95Z0

Wow, that's a great lead thanks!

As for the headphones, I was considering bike phones myself. I can't wear the newer ear-bud types because I have an ear condition and it creates weird pressure in my ears. Generally speaking though the weakest part of any earphones are the wires. If they are protected well enough I'd have thought that there's no reason that they shouldn't last for a while. Even so, I'm thinking a concealed small zipper might do the trick if I decide that I want them removeable.

I'm going to prototype the first hood with cheap old phones and a cheap fabric stuff, before spending out on expensive materials for the final build.

Ideally, I want to also build in a pouch at the back of the hood where the MP3/iPod could be placed. The most annoying thing I've found when wearing is that the wires can and do get all tangled. When I placed my hood on someone else about a week ago I got to see it from the outside too and it's not the most pleasing of sights...what do you reckon to a pouch where the player could be hidden?

There isn't an elegant way around that. I tried bluetooth headphones but they too are bulky. There has to be some bulk for a power source somewhere. Keep the cords short and you should be fine. Also are you piping in music? I use a line-in when I have to give my slave a verbal command but it's still faintly audible above the staticky white / brown noise in the background.

At the moment, it's a kind of mix of everything. The play partner I have at the moment recorded some phrases, but it's basically a shuffled playlist of speech, white noise, generated silence and music. So for that the standard mic out seems to be okay. Even if there is interference or what ever it seems to work okay for our needs.
