I spent 10 years as a truck driver all over Europe and I can tell you that most Dutch people speak extremely good English and in many cases better than a native Englishman. I may also add that in all my travels in/out/through that region I don't recall ever finding someone that didn't speak English.

I live in Holland and teach English and I can tell you most Dutch people who speak English speak very superficial English they have picked up on TV. In fact a Dutch government educational report a couple of years ago was damning on the decline in standards of multi-lingual education in the Netherlands, stating the understanding of English goes no further than Hollywood films where action telegraphs the dialog. Oh I've lived thirty years on the continent in five different countries and know that the Dutch command of foreign languages is in steep decline.

But look at it like this...most foreign people's Dutch is worse. And there is no need for us to be perfect in English. Our "superficial" English bring us were we want. I've just read the last few posts and I think Igorshand has a point. freedomwarf1 claimed the Dutch could speak good English, while Igorshand claim their English is superficial. It is rather irrelevant to the conversation whether the English can speak Dutch or not. I lean more toward Igorshand than freedomwarf1 about how well the Dutch can speak English. When you pass through Holland it is easy to get the impression all Dutch speak good English but when you live here, you realise that's not true, the Dutch aren't as good at speaking English as their reputation suggests. just my two penneth.
