The United States is located in a unique geologic and meteorologic area. North America is the location of the most frequent and strongest tornadoes in the world, the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are on some of the common storm tracks for hurricanes, three major seismic zones are located in North America, and finally the lower 48 states have 21 active and potentially dangerous volcanoes.

Four of those volcanoes are caldera type, and three are classified as super volcanoes.

We have seen in the past how inept FEMA was at handling major hurricanes, like Andrew and Katrina.

With the very real potential for catastrophic natural disasters, has the government done anything to improve its readiness, or are American citizens on their own?

It's a mix of both, JLF. Every agency tells everybody to be ready to take the first 3 days on their own kits. I base on a week.

I already told you the end of civilization plan.

We're in an odd spot here in Colorado. Low probability of natural disaster.

Yes. Mommy does not have a tissue for every child with a dripping nose.

I recommend that people who can afford to do so, slowly stack up for a year of food that will keep for at least forty years. Use up every year for twelve days' worth of the oldest stock and replenish. Make sure to have lots of drinking water and salt and soap.

And if disaster hits, do share with the less fortunates.

People near a volcano will need plenty of breathing apparatus and goggles to protect the eyes against volcanic ashes.

A small coal fired stove may come in handy. Coals in storage do not pollute and can be buried for save keeping.

And do ask your local zoos and (collectives of) farmers if they have contingency plans for their animals and crops.
