ChrisKNJ -> Nude vs. Naked... (12/12/2012 7:52:24 AM)

I read an essay yesterday about terminology and how their meaning can be very important. The specific example given was "Nude" vs. "Naked". The author indicated that Nude meant "without clothing". Fine, I get it. I have to differ on their version of naked however.

The author claimed that naked means without clothing but also without jewelry, accoutrements, etc..., Naked as the day you were born.

This also makes sense to me, but I think it falls short. Naked to me means vulnerability. People are amazing at building secret compartments within themselves to tuck away things. If somebody is standing before me "Naked", then they are not only exposing their physical self, but all of the other stuff that in the end means more. Hell, most people can be nude quite easily. It's the other stuff that is so hard.

Of course, I may be reading too much into this. But I do think words mean things. Hoping to pick the brain of the group. (First post by the way).

I agree with that.   Naked is nude with vulnerability, you paint nudes, you strip a girl naked.

quote:

She'd felt nothing when told to undress. Then a rush of shame overwhelmed her as she realized he had also removed his clothes.

"What's wrong ?" he inquired as he went about his nightly rituals.

When she regained her voice, she answered, " I shouldn't see you like, you're a soldier. You shouldn't be so vulnerable. " These weren't new concepts, at least not among her people. Why should she have to speak aloud what was commonly known?

" Vulnerable, " He played with the word, then his voice lost its amused tone and stated, " Look at me and tell me if I look weak. "

I grew up thinking they were interchangeable when applied to people but not to objects. I thought the the only difference is you could have a naked place like a naked room or a naked field, but only people were nude.

In checking the dictionary, I see my impressions were right. The definition for nude is naked and the definition for naked is nude.

But the more important one is what the girl gets C.

In the South, it's NEKKID

Interesting...I studied the history of the nude in art a few years ago. Do you have a source for this essay? I'd like to read it. I'd agree with the general prognosis that naked is more vulnerable. Not necessarily without jewellery etc, but I'd like to read more about that viewpoint.

Nakhla -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/12/2012 2:00:30 PM)

I always thought naked was more specific i.e. one can be nude and see a nude, but not be naked and see a naked.

Nude is vaguer.

Nakhla -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/12/2012 2:01:29 PM)

Also I don't think I've read of someone going from nude to naked, though it would make a fun literary conceit. [:D]

Yeah, I like your rationale....

"Nude" is not a word I use as it always felt abstract and impersonal, kinda like that artist's model. And "abstract and impersonal" is the furthest thing from my mind when I have my girl naked.

When I do have her strip bare, most especially if it's still early in the relationship, I revel more in how awkward and uncomfortable she is far more than the fact I have a nude and attractive female to behold and at my leisure.

Fact is, when (any) two different words mean the same thing (apparently), there's usually an instance when they actually don't.

Focus.

Nude has no emotional connotations to most people. Naked is more likely to have some.

sunshinemiss -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/12/2012 4:13:23 PM)

I occasionally do nude modeling for artists, and yes, I agree with the nude =no clothes, naked = vulnerable. It is a rare artist that can put me in the position where I show my vulnerability and they can capture it as well. There is one artist here. When he is sketching me, I find I show that vulnerability more. The other artists have commented on the change in my demeanor (but I don't think they've put together the why of it.).

One of the reasons I enjoy nude modeling is that I feel so strong when I do it. Even when I feel vulnerable, there is a strength.

Absolutely accurate!!!

littlewonder -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/12/2012 6:14:30 PM)

I've never really seen a difference between them. To me the only difference is that naked was the "cruder" word for nude.

Muttling -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/13/2012 1:45:54 PM)

Let me throw out a different thought on the topic.....

While I would generally use the naked to imply more vulnerable as others have posted, the OP says that the author explained his/her perceived differences in the text. This is simply good writing IMO. Different people have different perceptions of the implied meanings in words and it's good to get those implications out there when writing. This not only helps the reader understand what you're talking about, but also opens the way for discussions such as this thread.

I agree with that.   Naked is nude with vulnerability, you paint nudes, you strip a girl naked.

i like this definition

MercTech -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/14/2012 9:11:36 AM)

Naked equating to vulnerability is a cultural meme.

There are other cultures that equate being naked as safe with family and trusted friends. (think Sauna)

mnottertail -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/14/2012 9:15:52 AM)

Eh, coming from a big Finn and Scandinavian community, we showered together as a family as young people, and sauna is of course the bomb, but it is a different context.

And I am unsure how safe and comfortable a sauna is (unless you are being whipped with water soaked birch branches) because it is a hot and sweaty motherfucker.

Nudity and nakedidididididity wasn't the gig in the context. Everybody was.  The bigger power is where one is at a disadvantage in the pantie department as it were while the other is dressed in their usual garb.

meatcleaver -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/14/2012 9:20:23 AM)

I paint nudes, I also paint naked figures, the difference is context. You can have erotic naked figures as well as erotic nudes and you can have nudes which lack eroticism as well as naked figures. In my book, nudity is safe, nakedness if confrontational. It could be confrontational because the subject is vulnerable or it could be confrontational because the subject is brazen. Nudity makes for comfortable voyeurism, while nakedness makes for uncomfortable voyeurism.

iowaswitcher -> RE: Nude vs. Naked... (12/14/2012 9:23:21 AM)

i actually thought it was the opposite, nude was vulnerable and naked is just naked.
