pinniped -> ProDomme business question (12/12/2012 8:35:09 PM)

This question occurred to me in part because I've been playing with writing a story in which the main character is a professional Dominatrix. The story itself wouldn't revolve primarily around that, but it would play a part. (Mainly of complication....)

So I was thinking over the business aspects of being a ProDomme, a subject I've read a bit about, but am surely not an expert, when a question occurred to me: what do ProDommes do about liability insurance?

I mean, I'm sure there are a lot of answers, just as there are a wide range of degrees and ways of being a ProDomme. Some doubtless don't bother with it, but ones who are actually trying to run there business more-or-less legitimately must run into the question.

I did find an article which touches briefly on the subject: http://blogs.laweekly.com/arts/2012/08/dominatrix_s_and_m_taxes.php

That particular one makes it sound like the answer is basically "lie" -- or at least, give as few details about your business as you can possibly get away with. I can see that's probably the best most can do, but it also sounds like potential trouble, since insurers can certainly try to use that as grounds for not paying claims (not to mention cancelling your policy for the future or raising your premiums sky-high).

Anyway, if any ladies here have any knowledge or experience on the subject, I'd be interested, and I expect some others would be as well, even if only intellectually. Thanks!

No, I don't think so. It's a business. We live in a litigious country. Someone who runs a business without insurance risks losing a hell of a lot. Since Professional Dominants and houses of domination exist (unless all those ads are scams or hoaxes), someone must have at least considered this issue.

I suspect that, in fact, insuring a professional dominant would be safer than insuring, say, a truck driver. But since one job is seen as an economic necessity while the other is, to say the least, viewed as unconventional if not just plain freaky by much of society (and on the fringe, legally, at least in some places) I am sure it's more difficult to deal with.

I assume that any insurer would insure a Dominatrix operation. FFS, they insure bars (that can be liable for sending drunk drivers out) and day care centers. Pick an insurer, pose as someone planning to open up a dungeon, and ask about umbrella coverage.

Another way to limit liability is to simply operate as an LLC, especially if more than one Domme is employed. Have the dungeon itself hold the absolute minimum of assets - rent equipment from a shell company rather than own them. And don't buy the building but set up a lease.

You can only take out insurance as a pro Domme if you lie to the insurers and that of course is a crime.
You have building insurance and contents insurance but you don't have public liability as a business.
Someone mentioned not having your own property. Most pro Dommes in the UK rent but some own their own chambers. The problem with renting is, regular landlord inspections and I don't think many landlords are going to be too happy when they find a dungeon in their living room!. My ex partner had a removal truck and Dommes would pay him to remove the dungeon furniture from rented property during these inspections. He would wait just down the road and once the landlord had gone, the dungeon was restored. Bit of a hassle if you ask me.
Being a pro Domme is still underground in many respects. Its a discreet business where neighbors and your local councilor hopefully don't know about you. T
In the UK two Dommes or more working in the same chambers is classed as a brothel and therefore illegal.

A very good book about a pro Domme is 'Concertina' by Susan Winemaker
