An interesting report by the Joseph Roundtree Foundation (JR exposed the scandal of poverty in Britain in 1901) has revealed of the scale of poverty in work and under employment in 2012 Britain. Reported in The Guardian the report blows open the myth of the work shy and the scandal of scapegoating the poor by the rich and better off. While the banks have their debt socialised and politicians kow tow to corporations giving them tax gifts, the real victims are branded as a social and economic problem when they are just the colateral damage of red toothed capitalism.

tis a universal truth my friend
And reason one I had high hopes for the occupy movement.
But just looking on this microcosm of life we know as CM.... its maligned even by its victims.
Bookmarked the report for later

Wow. It's nice to see somebody linking to a proper UK newspaper rather than the fucking Mail for a change, isn't it?

And reporting on a piece of research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, too. Respectable outfit as well as respectable paper.

The US is actually number one among developed countries in working poor category, the UK holds the second place: http://www.mybudget360.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/low-wage-2.jpg

How silly. We all know that the US is the richest and most prosperous nation on the face of the planet. Pay no attention to the reality behind the curtain.

The US might be the richest country in the world but to equate wealth with social and economic justice is nonsense. The fact the US is the richest counry in the world bitter poverty in the US is an indictment on the social and economic injustice there. Is the UK better? Hell no, it is just as bad.

The editing is du to my enjoying a whisky or two this evening.

Ive been moaning about the proliferation of part time jobs for ages. Sure they are needed for mothers with kids who can only work a few hours a day, I agree with that entirely.

My argument is with those companies who have a myriad of part time workers to cut down on costs by evading government contribution schemes after you have worked a set number of hours. Of course, politicians wont moan since if 50,000 jobs are lost and then replaced by 100,000 jobs, they can claim full credit for getting so many into work. Double the numbers working half the hours ISNT double the jobs, despite the claims.

I agree. I also believe that when "jobs created" numbers are figured, they should only count 37.5 to 40 hours per week. If a company hires 2 people to fill those hours, it should still be only 1 job.

I'm on your page but I would say they shouldn't even be counted as one job but two part time jobs because the chances are two people will be living in poverty on two part time jobs.

Before somebody pops up and says some people want a part time job to enhance their other income, I agree but the pattern is more people are living on part time jobs and the government is handing out means tested welfare as suppliment which creates a poverty trap for the person with the part time job.
