Where did they say that?

A conclusive "they" might be nice.

Anonymous is a superconsciousness, or an insurgent direct democracy, whichever you prefer; what it doesn't seem to be, is an organization. And if you want to get technical, their free speech infringement, if we call it that, is of the sort where one group shouts louder than another. I think they should have dropped it, but I can think of about five thousand more important free speech impingements off the top of my head that aren't getting this level of attention.

Unfortunate, perhaps, but true: WBC is bound to occasionally get popped in the mouth.

To reiterate, though, Anonymous should've dropped it, I think.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

tazzygirl -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 8:49:12 AM)

WBC is getting this attention... and many seem to be happy about it.

But, eventually, as it almost always happens, when Anonymous turns on someone we happen to like, then what?

My point, I think, is should we condone their actions, as a collective group since that is how they seem to address the public, simply because we dont like their target?

Notsweet -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 8:49:18 AM)

Taking down the site is impinging free speech, and shouldn't be condoned.

Plus, as in all controversies, it's good to have their website up so others can see how bereft of Christianity and human compassion these animals are.

Nope. Don't see any actual claim by Anonymous for the site being down.

I cant help your lack of reading comprehension on this topic.

I know you can't. That's mostly because I don't have any lack. Show me where they said it, Tazzy. All you have is circumstantial evidence. "They said they were going to take WBC down." "The site is down." While I understand that would be an amazing coincidence, it still isn't proof.

And, as I said before, I have no problem with Anonymous taking actions that aren't illegal. If they did hack the site, then, I don't support that.

tazzygirl -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 9:12:42 AM)

you know, I had the link and how to find it all typed out. But, frankly, I am tired of doing your homework. The links are available within my posts.

Go find them.

Yes, our favorite bone of contention is also making the most of this tragedy.

Hackers target Westboro Baptist Church after Newtown threat

After church leaders announce plans to protest at site of school massacre, Anonymous posts the personal information for dozens of members of the extremist group, including names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers.

That is so not their normal way of sending out a message.

And the site is down.

http://www.godhatesfags.com/?COLLCC=1631557021&

So... we all know Westboro is full of assholes. But they are exercising their freedoms.

Is Anonymous in right here? Is it ok to silence a group because we dont like what they have to say?

It is, of course, not okay in this country to silence a group because we don't like what they have to say -- witness John F. Kerry & Associates' attempts to silence the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth because the former didn't like what the latter had to say.

However, since this specific group, Westboro, has a well-documented history of going far beyond simply exercising their right to freedom of speech -- including engaging in acts of civil disobedience -- Anonymous is right to post suppposed personal information about Westboro's members.

tazzygirl -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 9:16:26 AM)

Civil Disobedience is where you draw the line at allowing them no more free speech?

Again, this isnt about what information they posted... this is about hacking into a site.

Just an odd thought.
If Westboro Baptist has a right to free speech, then a large group of bikers and outraged citizens surely has the right to get between them and a funeral.

It's hard, this free speech. But we've determined that it does not impede free speech to keep distance between that free speech and other people's right to freely assemble. So let them scream and wave their pathetic signs, but at a distance. Ten miles would be my choice, but a distance that would at least mute their ridiculous noise.

A large group of bikers and non-biker outraged citizens will prevent the Westboro protestors from desecrating the funerals in CT.

How many people do you know who have claimed to do soemthing but you found out later it wasn't true?

FR

Whether Anonymous did or did not hack into the Westboro site is irrelevant to me. If some group hacked into this site and gave out my name and number and address, it is also irrelevant to me, since I cannot be held liable for living an alternative orientation, and my personal information is readily available to anyone who cares to search. The only information that I assume to be relatively private where I am concerned are my bank account and medical records. Is hacking ethical? No. However, anyone who believes that what they post on the internet is secure from hackers does not recognize reality.

tazzygirl -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 9:44:30 AM)

Again, the links are available in my posts.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 9:48:20 AM)

As for the hackers? I've hacked in the past. It was for a good cause. I exposed 2 criminals. Shoot me.

Just0Plain0Mike -> RE: Westboro strikes again... or silencing what offends us. (12/17/2012 10:42:25 AM)

There is a time and a place for protest, a funeral isn't one of them. Protesting at the funeral of murdered children? To "sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment", are you kidding me? That goes beyond bad taste, it's morally repugnant. I thought the politicians and activists using this atrocity to make political gains were bottom-feeding scum and opportunists. These Westboro freaks are inhuman.

My wife died of cancer 7 months ago. If someone had protested at her funeral, praising God for his glory in giving her a slow, painful death, I can't say what I'd have done. I'm just sure it wouldn't have been pleasant.

As to the specific hacking aspect. It was illegal. If the person involved is caught, he deserves a harsh swat on the wrist. Maybe a "Shame, shame! Bad boy, don't do it again."

I dont care who hacked the westboro website, give em on of the smaller Hawaiian islands as a private estate complete with marine guards and unlimited use of a presidential plane.
