According to best estimates, there are 3 million doomsday preppers in America.

The majority of these people are armed with everything from crossbows to NFA class weapons (less than one percent,) with the most popular being the .22 since ammo is cheap and plentiful (according to one prepper website.)

However many do own what are called Assault weapons, some own weapons with equal capability that do not fall under that classification.

Some are teaching children as young as five to shoot accurately at any potential threat.

A lot of these people plan to evacuate the cities if the worst case scenario happens, but some have actually fortified their homes.

Answer me this, how can a child under the age of maybe 13, decide who is and isnt a threat?

These "estimates"... I'm (morbidly) curious... where do the "Best" ones come from?

In the scenario these people are worrying about it's easy. If the other person is not a part of the group or family then they are a threat. At the point you're worrying about the zombie apocalypse threat detection becomes easy.... shoot it if it shambles.

That is what I am trying to find, the best I got was an article on a website.

The NatGeo series Doomsday Preppers has a viewing of 4 million

So what proportion of the people that watch the NatGeo series are actually preppers?

One in 1000?

One in 100?

One in 10 seems very very high.

In 1986 I purchased an old Nike missile site south of where I lived. The command center is underground and nuclear hardened, and the entire site covers 34 acres.

Since then some friends and I have purchased an additional 200 acres that surround the site, primarily for hunting purposes. We have built 6 structures above ground, a couple of cabins, a barn and an equipment storage garage.

Originally power was provided by some diesel generators and they were only used during hunting season.

IN 2000 we installed wind generators and renovated the command complex to make it usable.

We have four wells, have renovated the original site 10000 gallon water storage tank, and installed a satellite internet link.

As far as communication, it wasnt till this year that we even got cellphone service in that particular area.

Is it meant as a prepper sanctuary, well kinda, but none of the buildings above ground could be called "bullet resistant." We could probably squeeze out enough storage for maybe 2 years worth of dehydrated food or MRE's for our entire families, if we decided to hole up there.

We do keep more than the FEMA recommended supplies on hand, maybe two months in case of emergency.

If worse came to worse, we are better prepared than most, but we are not fanatics about it.

The only food we really buy in bulk is dog food.

Good for you and your prepper chums!

Of course, when doomsday comes, I won't be looking down at you quite as much as I am now.

I expect I'll feel like a proper charlie when the zombies take over.

Well if worst came to worst, I could get the two months worth of food, my family, my guns, my ammo and my dogs to that location, as could my hunting friends.

With and unlimited supply of water, and two months worth of food, we would end up hunting for meat, cant grow anything till spring.

Oh yeah, could get my horses there too, the cows and goats would mean a few other trips

Zombies are a popular snark to aim at survivalists, but fears about a social breakdown go back a lot further than the first zombie boom around the turn of the '80s. You're talking at least a century, and people were writing some pretty nasty apocalyptic scenarios between the great war and the depression. Some of the stuff that was published in the pulps makes Jerry Aherne look like John Wyndham by comparison.
A certain degree of preparation for the worst case isn't necessarily a sign of hysteria or lunacy in and of itself. It's only when you're holed up in an armed camp reading The Turner Diaries while looking forwards to a chance to shoot anybody you fancy with impunity that you've crossed a line.

There is that.
The general critical trope these days (or at least since Dawn Of The Dead did very well artistically and financially) is more that zombies are a metaphor for the working classes. That suggests a certain elitist disdain for the hoi palloi in a lot of fiction, but it also suggests a link between the recent boom of zombie fiction and the increasing feelings of insecurity and looming financial catastrophe, which isn't inappropriate, even if it's only one of the many metaphors zombies can be used to embody.

I am not worried about zombies, asteroid impact, comet impact, nuclear war, or massive solar flair.

What concerns me is the number of "new" viruses that keep popping up in the various remote areas of the planet, or out of China. Sooner or later someone is going to bring out something that is as virulent as the flu, and as deadly as ebola.

The problem I foresee is that services get overwhelmed by the number of sick leading to panic in the streets.

If people refuse to control their own population, then bring it on. There are only two sorts of swarms that destroy their envoronment, those that migrate and those that suffer a catastrophic dieback when they finish swarming. We have nowhere to migrate to, whatever the Extropians think.

This is the work of bad writers not reality.

A virus does not come from nowhere. It has to evolve from an existing strain. The existing strain must be resident in some other species, which it isn't wiping out, It must then evolve the ability to infect humans, this isn't particularly easy. If it does establish a foothold in humans it would continue to function much as it did in its original host, i.e. not killing all or quickly or it would have wiped itself out by wiping out all of its hosts. So it would have to also evolve extreme virulence. Even then for it to be a worldwide threat it would need to evolve to be communicable by air and to have a longish period where the infected is symptom free but contagious. That's just too many mutations of the exact right kind in a short time window to happen naturally.
