BritBiker2 -> electric shocks (12/20/2012 3:05:19 PM)

Can anyone advise on the use and availability of equipment that will give a slave a relatively safe but painful electric shock?

Violet wands - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violet_wand

Tens units - http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TENS_unit

Remote dog training collar. Some like the one in the link has a vibration setting which can be nice to use as well.

Electricity above the waist is not considered safe.

You want to look up a website from Uncle Abdul. He's the author of "Juice".

That website has evidently been closed down. It appears that buying the book is the only way to get any of Uncle Abdul's knowledge.

This is an oft-repeated myth, that ANY application of electricity above the waist is unsafe. It's simply not true. Perhaps the myth isn't a bad one, since there are a lot of idiots out there who wouldn't know the difference between a safe and unsafe application, and so shouldn't be messing around with electricity at all. However, the fact remains that it is a myth.

TENS and EMS therapies are routinely used on the upper body. Of course safety issues exist, but they don't apply to everyone, to all types of electricity, and to all areas "above the waist". For example, there are specific concerns for people with cardiac pacemakers or other heart problems, and certain areas must be avoided, e.g., carotid sinus nerves, laryngeal and pharyngeal muscles. However, that doesn't make all applications above the waist dangerous. It's sort of like saying that it's unsafe for pedestrians to cross the street. Yeah, if you don't take the basic precautions of using crosswalks, following traffic signals, and watching out for cars, it's pretty damned risky.

I'm not claiming anything in regard to shock collars. I don't know their specifications, and how their safety might differ from EMS and TENS. But I'd be very surprised to learn that they can't be safely used in some manner above the waist.

My post was in response to the "dog shock collar" reply.

hardbodysub -> RE: electric shocks (12/31/2012 9:39:51 AM)

Yes, I know. That changes nothing.

Agreed.

I also despise the practice of handing out misinformation to newbs in the name of simplicity.

Dogs wear shock collars around their necks without having heart attacks, human physiology isn't all that different from canines. We've used shock collars in SM play and as part of everyday discipline over the years with good effect and no problems.

The general rule on safety in electrical play is to not have over 100 milliamps {1/10 of an Amp) pass across the heart for fear of stopping the electrical rhythm that drives the heart. As I understand it this is based on US Navy work done in the 40's and isn't held in much esteem by medical professionals or bdsm practitioners. More old wives tales than science. That is where the 'below the waist' rules came from too since the heart is above the waist... I consider that way too much overkill (no pun intended). I would caution people playing with electrical toys to make sure their sub or victim doesn't have a pacemaker or a history of heart problems.

We have used tens units, PES and Folsom Products made for bdsm, violet wands (both antique and modern beauty supply models), current limited power supplies and various home made items for a long time and think they are all as safe as the dominant is... without common sense nothing is 'safe'. BTW, the violet wands sold to beauty shops are used all over the body just like the antique ones were 80 years ago, it may well be quack medicine but it appears to be safe quack medicine to use them on the face, scalp, across the chest and more.

I've worn dog shock collars. Still alive and breathing.

Imo, as long as you're healthy all around with no signs of sudden distress, I think you're fine. If you're concerned of heart attacks or strokes or it runs in your family and if you're not relatively healthy, then you may wanna get a full checkup first.

Other than that, many use tens units that you can buy pretty much anywhere these days and are pretty safe. Mostly it feels like anywhere from a light muscle massage to a deep, throbbing muscle contraction. There's also a sex toy called a Stinger..not much more than the shock of a 9 volt battery. There are also electric flyswatters. Again, the shock of a 9 volt battery.

There are violet wands but they don't really give an electric shock. They are more the feel of static electricity on your body. Remember the feel of running your feet along the carpet and then touching a doorknob? That's pretty much what you feel.
