Yes, some kids in Michigan got an early start to christmas vacation, as classes in 25 school districts were cancelled.

It had nothing to do with the shootings at Sandy Hook school, it had to do with the Mayan Doomsday theory on the 21st.

They had kids posting on line that it would be a good day to go out with a bang and decided not to take the chance. Personally I think that was a much better reason to cancel classes than the last time when they shut them down because the Governer was signing a bill they didn't like.

with a bit of luck the world will end for everyone who believes it will, then at least some of the dregs of the gene pool will have been cleared away and the rest of us can carry on in a slightly more intelligent world

Well considering the degeneration of human society, I am not real sure that an apocalyptic event occurring midnight central time would be a bad thing, to be honest.
