In a setback for Speaker John Boehner, House Republicans have pulled their fiscal cliff bill known as "Plan B," because they didn't have enough votes for it to pass. The bill would have raised taxes on people making more than $1 million a year. The House bill was going nowhere in the Senate and faced a veto threat from President Barack Obama. From Politico breaking news In a setback for Speaker John Boehner, House Republicans have pulled their fiscal cliff bill known as “Plan B,” because they didn’t have enough votes for it to pass. The bill would have raised taxes on people making more than $1 million a year. The House bill was going nowhere in the Senate and faced a veto threat from President Barack Obama. “The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass,” Boehner said in a Thursday night statement. “Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to stop all of the January 1 tax rate increases and replace the sequester with responsible spending cuts that will begin to address our nation’s crippling debt. Cantor is more in step with the tea party types but he is despised by the remaining moderates, perhaps enough to cause some of them to bolt the caucus which could result in a coalition with the Democrats to put Pelosi in the Speaker's chair. Yeah his presser was almost as pathetic as the NRA one. However in a sign of how shallow the GOP bench has gotten no one seems to be emerging as a challenger for the Speaker's chair. Cantor and Ryan seem content to let him twist in the wind as long as basically nothing gets done in the House except ideologically pure bills that have no future in the Senate. More than likely the new House will pass a "tax cut" to restore the existing tax rates on everyone below some threshold as its first act. Apparently there are members who will not vote for anything that raises taxes in any way but once the rates return to the Clinton levels will happily vote to return them to the present rate. The sequestered spending cuts may just have to happen, I see no way the House will pass a substitute package that isn't entirely putting the burden on the poor and middle class.

It is not a simple issue, and it can not be discussed fairly out of the full context of the plan. The Democrats certainly want to portray Republican members as protecting the rich. It may not be the case.

I do mean the idea picking a small segment to tax (rich, but not very rich, and super-rich will not be affected, and capital gains as well) would not cure the complex problem. It is rather a strange politically motivated game. Canada collected federal tax revenue per capita is about the same as in the US today. I hear no talk about the "fiscal cliff". I think the (rich) congressmen (Democrats and Republicans) are not stupid. They do understand the problems, but both Obama office and Republican leadership come out with BS "solutions" that do not solve anything. It is generally agreed their "projections and calculations" ten years into the future are funny examples of magical thinking. I would suggest to get rid of tax loopholes first, perhaps tax capital gains as regular income, stop illegal unnecessary wars, and then see what else needs to be done. Merry Christmas to you.
