crazyml -> Chocolate Confectionery Banned in the USA (12/21/2012 4:59:58 PM)

The Kinder Surprise, a chocolate egg containing a toy, is banned in the United States, on the grounds of the danger it poses.

Bathe, fellow CM'ers in the fucking irony.

Fellow -> RE: Chocolate Confectionery Banned in the USA (12/22/2012 1:24:03 AM)

Perhaps Al Qaeda may be hiding there.

Moonhead -> RE: Chocolate Confectionery Banned in the USA (12/22/2012 4:22:15 AM)

It is pretty nasty chocolate, to be fair. Maybe that's why they banned it?

Beautiful and delicious, the irony is.

Absolutely.
The chocolate gets left over, as even kids mostly don't like it, and most of the toys are just hazards to everybody walking on bare feet, nearly on par with Lego.

And how many kids has the Kinder Surprise killed? less than guns, no doubt.

Just having googled, it probably tastes nasty because it contains 45% chocolate while Hershey bars contain between 4-10% chocolate and chocolate confectionary that contains more chocolate has a more bitter taste. people who like chocolate prefer the bitter taste, others prefer emulsifiers and sugars.

I'm surprised I was the first and I am sure I'm going to be accused of being anti-American again when none of this is about nationality but humanity.

Merry Christmas.

As was documented in the other thread where you are also handwaving away childhood deaths and lying about the figures, 17,000 children and infants a year in the US alone choke annually because their air passages are too small for objects of a certain size.

The warning is sounded by the medical community, not by the police...same as where you live.

The plastic toy covered by this candy is a proven danger based on reality, not your smirking contempt for kid's safety.

I'm not surprised.

The chocolate and the toy inside have the exact same taste.

RemoteUser -> RE: Chocolate Confectionery Banned in the USA (12/22/2012 6:18:00 PM)

I bought some for my girl to smuggle back with her, but she forgot them [&o]

Oh well. There's always the next time she's up, in February. [:D]

17,000 don't choke on Kinder Surpise so what are all the other things banned by the US?

oh, there isn't any. Is this ban a form of Hershy protectionism?

I suspect you think that because Kinder Surprise chocolate contains far more chocolate than UK or US confectionary which are claimed to be chocolate but usually contains so little chocolate, it can't be called chocolate in the EU.

Sorry, but no.
That stuff is supersweet, most likely because of the supposed "milk" layer.
I love good, dark chocolate, this is not it.

US Chocolate Reg's:
  • Milk Chocolate: 10+% Chocolate Liquor*
  • Sweet Chocolate: 15%+ Chocolate Liquor*
  • Bittersweet/SemiSweet (sometimes labeled "Dark") Chocolate: 35%+ Chocolate Liquor*
*US Reg's state that Cocoa Butter content of Chocolate Liquor is required to be between 50-60%. No specification of required Cocoa Butter content outside of that.

Canadian Chocolate Reg's
  • Milk Chocolate: 25+% Total Cocoa Solids (15+% Cocoa Butter, 2.5+% Cocoa Solids (Liquid and/or Powder))
  • Sweet Chocolate: 30+% Total Cocoa Solids (18+% Cocoa Butter, 12+% Cocoa Solids)
  • Bittersweet/SemiSweet/Dark Chocolate: 35+% Total Cocoa Solids (18+% Cocoa Butter, 14+% Cocoa Solids)

EU Chocolate Reg's:
  • Milk Chocolate: 25+% Total Dry Cocoa Solids (2.5+% Cocoa Solids (Liquid and/or Powder)); 25+% Total Fat (Cocoa Butter and Milkfat combined)
  • Family Chocolate: 20+% Total Dry Cocoa Solids (2.5+% Cocoa Solids (Liquid and/or Powder)); 25+% Total Fat (Cocoa Butter and Milkfat combined)
  • "Chocolate" (various types, incl. Dark): 35+% Total Cocoa Solids (18+% Cocoa Butter, 14+% Nonfat Cocoa Solids)

No, that's not it.

If you're ever passing a shop and have a spare quid or two, try some quality German chocolate such as Ritter Sport or either of the two Polish brands, Goplana or Wedel. You should find them to be quality chocolate precisely for the reasons you state above.

In Poland there used to be bars of 'chocolate like' (simulated chocolate, rather like cooking chocolate - a former communist thing) which is cheap and of low quality. This to me is how the chocolate covering the Kinder toy tastes.

I'm not an expert of course but am of the opinion that quality chocolate and quality coffee both smell the same.

They need to develop a candy that tastes like scotch.

The fact is, Kinder Surprise is 45% while Hershey is 4-10% chocolate and British makes aren't any better. Kinder, however, is owned by Italian company Ferrero and was introduced into Germany in 1974. Ritter is 50-60% chocolate. So Kinder is not far behind good quality chocolate in its contents.

Nope. It tastes nasty because it's horribly sickly sweet. If it was bitter, it'd taste a lot more like chocolate. (Mind you, it's worth bearing in mind that I think Hershey's is pretty foul stuff as well. The American comedian Rich Hall does a routine about the UK chocolate company Cadbury's being bought out by Kraft, in which he mentions that the first time he tasted Dairy Milk he found himself floating down a brightly lit tunnel with people he used to know who've died waiting for him at the far end...)
