The convention of capital letters being dominant and lower case letters being submissive stems from the old kinky IRC, I believe. (Does anyone know if people were doing it earlier?) A chatroom, basically, and it was useful to be able to enter the chatroom and see at a glance who were the subs and who were the doms. This convention has no historical connection to meatlife BDSM.

To your question of if anyone know if people were doing it earlier. The answer to that is "yes".

To you comment about "This convention has no historical connection to meatlife BDSM." It isn't true, there is a historical relevance and connection to BDSM lifestyle, and it dates back to 1000s of years.

I am not suggesting that you shouldn't do what you want to do, but rather specifically answering those questions you asked.

Thank you. Could you refer me please to a source where this is discussed in more detail?

Personally I don't believe one's role should have any baring on their presentation of the English language. I grew up with learning disabilities, and even now I fight very hard to type, and use proper grammar. Capitalization, and slash speak restrictions is a very hard limit for me. I like to present myself as an inelegant person, not as someone's tool. Whether I am a sub or not I am still me.

Fast reply.

Express yourself however you like. Some people like it, others think it's silly, and it will have little or no effect on face to face interactions.

One thing I will say though - it makes it easier if you stick to only messing with the capitalisation for yourself and your own partner rather than the community as a whole. It might annoy someone if you do it to their name and that's not how they identify. And it gets very very hard to read and understand when people type things with a slash every three or four words.

A domme who makes judgements over something so petty isn't worth mingling to begin with.

I would argue against that....if she has unbelievably large tits....that could sway my judgement.

Do what fits YOU best.
Unless you have a dominant then ask them.
You will have people that say yes, some say no.
Me I could careless as long as you aren't doing slashy speak.

If it does something for my submissive...or if it's just the way another submissive (friend or stranger) chooses to type...I'm okay with it.

Within the chatrooms here, using lower case is a way of advertising to all in the room that you are a submissive. (It's like throwing blood in the water around sharks. This can be a good thing.) Some people enjoy the submissive feelings that typing this way can make them feel. Just be careful. Starting a mild power exchange with strangers can make it easy for you to slide into "sub frenzy" and make unwise decisions.

If someone demands that you cap their pronouns and smallersize your own, either enjoy the online role play and don't take it seriously or else tell them that you do not want to begin a premature power exchange with someone you haven't even met yet. Until you are owned by someone, this is entirely your decision.

Psst...you didn't mention this but some people will type (and even TALK) in third person. Feel free to talk/type as you normally would, unless you are in a roleplay chatroom where it is required. Personally, I am saving this third person speech for punishment, lol. bo would HATE IT.

There are times Master will make me speak in third person but not as punishment but because he's in an "it" mood, where he sees me as nothing more than that and he wants to ingrain it into me that day. Plus we both find it kinda hot.

Thanks for those links littlewonder. I had suspicions that this didn't start with internet BDSM. I kept thinking about how uppercase has been used historically to denote the majestic and it made sense that someone, somewhere would've been doing the opposite. But I couldn't find the references. That subshelpingsubs link was great.

For me personally when I think of lowercase, my mind automatically goes to God.

In many religions and in biblical texts both new and old testament, many times you will see that God and any other words for God are capped included Him or He. And you will see that sometimes his followers are lowercase. You will also see this in Hinduism and Buddhism texts at times as well.

So, no it's not just a bdsm textspeak thing. But it is where many of us learned from and I guess for me it was just familiar and easy for me to adapt because of religion.
