I am curious how many of you find quality candidates before elections start and help those campaigns with time and money.

Or at least work on early campaigns when it does the most good.

Bitching at the voting booth you have crappy choices is lazy and ignorant.

The world isn't based on a 2 dimensional good vs. bad scenario like that.

The actual choice for voters is between several versions of 'not very good'.

And the axioms about power dictate the difficulty for a given candidate to remain 'good' once they have become successful. The better job you do at supporting them, the more power you are producing to corrupt them.

The current crop of venal slugs in office today were part of the wave of free thinking, idealistic 'good' candidates of the 70s, and the nature of the organization mandates that their only chance of career survivial is to put re-election above all else, and try to out-sleaze the other candidates.

Bill Bradley wrote a illuminating essay on that very thing in his first term.

It is an important question: where the candidates come from? Do people have some real control over the process? I guess not. Big money and bribery system does not let in outsiders.

Just remember that there are a very large portion of voters that think YOUR politicians are shitty because of you?

But you are asking a fair question even if your subject is not very appropriate in my view anyway.

I have convinced a few people to run for local political offices and participated in their campaigns. I am also involved in my local school board but have not had much input on the state and national scene.

I mostly stick to participation in local political offices and issues although I follow state and national closely.

This election my focus was on "spreading awareness". My current understanding of the problems came to me much too late to do anything significant other than research who my vote ought to be going to (green party). As for next election, that gives me a 4 year ramp and yes I'm planning on seeing what I can do at a more direct level. I have yet to figure out if green is really a choice or must it be an entirely new party.

I'll let you know when I find someone actually worth supporting.

This afternoon my supervisor was complaining about his "other job". He is a township supervisor where he lives. He said its getting to the point that he's not sure if he even wants to finish out his term, let alone run for reelection. There is a little bit of history on why he ran in the first place--something having to do with the fire department after his cousin, a firefighter, died in a local fire. I don't know the details because I don't live in the township, I live in the city.

Anyway, I told him that I'd been thinking he ought to run against our do-nothing Congressman, Mike Kelly. He laughed and said he has no interest in becoming a douche and reminded me that I'd once said that I dislike politicians. He also said he wouldn't want to be away from his family, particularly his little girl, for days or weeks at a time.

I'm usually in early with somebody, and mostly that somebody doesn't even make it through the primary.

Being able to say, "I told you so," is small consolation, though rubbing their support of Obama in the faces of gun-owning Democrats is quite a bit of fun at present.
