This is a genuine question. I mean no malice in my question and seek a genuine answer in the hope that it will not only educate me, but also other users.

We all see so often when a new question is posted on a topic tht gets a lot of new threads (i.e. what's the difference between a sub and a slave, or Fake Profiles, or how to find a woman on CM, or any number of other subjects) that there is invariably one poster who will say "Use the search function."

Very god advice and i agree. but. then you see other threads that get revived after X amount of time and people saying "It is against TOS to resurrect old threads"

This got me wondering... What is the cut off point where a thread CAN be resurrected without violating TOS? Is there a cut off point? (and in all honesty, should the board not be set up to auto-lock a thread once that point has been reached?)

if it's more than three months old leave it alone. if your search throws tons of threads at you read them because most likely you'll get your answer there.

starting a new thread on something that we get multiple times a week won't get you any decent answers other than use the search and stop whinging if all you want to do is rant.

Thank you.. that seems like a pretty good cut off to be honest. and i assume that is 3 months since the last reply? or 3 months since the thread was begun? (sorry for being picky, but I think a definite guide line needs to be agreed on etc and there's always gonna be some smart ass that will say "Well that thread already got necro'd and the last post was only an hour old so it is fair game.)

I'm not sure if the rule is from first post or last post, but common sense should make it clear that the longer ago it was, the fewer of the original participants will be around so replying is a waste of time.

Generally you've got two different issues. The 'use the search function' reply tends to be when someone is asking something that gets asked every few days. They're not so much suggesting the poster go and join an old thread, but rather saying the topic has been done to death and they will get everything they need from reading the other threads. Most necro threads tend to be something a bit less common - someone has searched for something a bit more unusual and hence the results that come up are pretty old. In those cases, there might be something new to say or people might be ready to discuss it again, so it's worth starting a new thread.

Once a necro thread is back on the front page I wouldn't hold it against people for replying without realising it's age, it's easily done.

yes it is exactly that which prompted the question (the current slew of 5 or 6 threads on fake profiles) and sadly, common sense doesn't seem to be very common these days, so i thought a directly asked question in a thread like this might give some relatively idiot-proof guidance.

I thank you all for your replies and yes, I do know how easy it is to add to an old resurrected thread.. I ahve been guilty of it today (hides my head in shame) it wasn't untill the reply after mine stating the thread was 2 years old that it twigged.

I'm guessing that when someone gets a bug up their butt about a particular subject they just want to draw as much attention as possible to it, even if it means picking over the old, cold bones of a long-dead drama-llama thread

The more you answer those that resurrect these threads the more they will bounce trying to come back with new nicks, etc as they keep reviving because it is feeding them. Just saying,,,,would make it easier to me to get caught up with him if yall didnt. Just sayin........;)

OP, let me explain what to do about the old threads. If you're looking at a subject and the only threads you can find pertaining to it are ancient, then begin your initial post like this:

I've been wondering about <subject>. I tend to agree with what LuckyAlbatross said here <give link>, but also what SimplyMichael said in this thread <other link>. (Of course, go into greater detail). That way, you're letting old threads not come to life by posting in them, but you are building upon what they had to say.
