Yesterday, I watched a LIVE BROADCAST of the House of Representatives. They were discussing bills about veterans and releasing the school records of children in state custody to social workers. This morning, in another LIVE BROADCAST, they're talking about North Korea. Sure these bills are important, but why aren't they being put on hold until the fiscal cliff situation is resolved? Shouldn't the House and Senate be spending 100% of their time together finding a solution instead of discussing other issues that can wait? With them spending so little time on this, I'm not surprised they haven't come up with a solution.

Why?

It shouldn't take much time to come to an agreement. Any competent negotiators truly wanting to arrive at a solution, could do it in a day.

The problem is not that they aren't spending enough time to agree - it's that they're more committed to not losing than they are to solving the problem.

Honestly, I believe in the "fiscal cliff" as much as I believed the stories of economic collapse if we didn't bail out the banks and give all the bankers massive bonuses. The entire thing is hysterical hand waving designed to get us to funnel more money to various interests. I'm perfectly content to ignore it.
