TieMeInKnottss -> Corsets (12/31/2012 10:52:43 AM)

I love corsets. I have a thick and long wasit and am trying to find well made corsets. I have heard steel boning is best and I would like ones that could be used as "outer wear". Since I have a long waist I want something that would not ride up when I lift my arms. Any suggestions?

What features have you found to be best? I see ones with zippers, laces, busk, hooks..

Material -silk, muslin, brocade?

Straps- are they always like bra straps or are there more substantial?

Any "key words" that mean quality? I have seen some in lingerie stores that seem pretty flimsy & I don't want to buy something that is good for one or two wears and then the stays come out or bend...

Steel boning, always. You need stays (laces) that you can adjust to your shape. You don't need shoulder straps at all and, if it has them, it's not really a corset as much as a corset-style top. You can wear an over-bust corset with nothing under it and you can wear an under-bust corset with a blouse underneath it. Either will work as outerwear. As far as materials go, brocade is a popular choice but any pretty, durable fabric will work. It just depends on what look you're going for and what you'll be wearing with it.

Ms. Martha's has wonderful corsets and there are quite a few good corsetiers online. However, the best thing to do is to go to a corset maker and have your measurements taken for a custom job. That will give you the best fit but it won't be cheap.

I would never buy or have a corset made with a zipper. I always buy hooked fronts and laced backs. Unless its an underbust, I always buy a V fronted corset.

I like brocade but it must be fully lined with a good strong calico. This was the last corset I purchased and its beautiful http://www.myspace.com/veldalauder/photos/1139898

I have never owned a corset with straps. If the corset fits properly then it should hold you like a well fitted glove.

Use someone who specializes in corsets and doesn't just do corsets as a side line. Either that or get a corset made to measure. Its well worth the investment. If you buy off the Internet always purchase a size under what you would normally buy.
This is the sort of site I use http://www.fairygothmother.co.uk/specialist_corsets.htm

I always try buy coiled steel because I find it molds to my shape nicely and keeps its shape.

I checked the fairy godmother. Site and they do have some beauties. As I live in MD in the US not practical to go shopping there!

If time is not an issue, you might prowl the MD Ren Faire next summer and fall .. I'm sure you can find vendors there to get you into that perfect (and perfectly-built-for-you) corset. ;)

There are some corset makers who have various straps you can choose to add (or not) and options for the size of  "boning" used.  The straps are not always thin and bra like.   I would recommend purchasing one that is lined and without a zipper.

Here is a link to a fabulous corset maker.  I don't think she is accepting any orders right now, but you can check out what a beautifully designed corset should be made of and look like. http://electradesigns.net/.

<minor thread hijack for humor>

Personally I like the kind artists tend to wear while their painting:

Every time I do this with her I can't help but think of that song "Meet Virginia"
"She wears high heels when she's exercising. Ain't that beautiful?"

Simply stunning Both Carol and her work.
Those panties look awfully familiar too!

TieMeInKnottss, you might want to drop our very own LucyLastic a note.
She offers a lovely collection. http://www.collarchat.com/m_4329233/tm.htm
