Much to the chagrin of my ex-bitch (I mean wife) I used to tell my kids; "If God had wanted us to spell, he wouldn't have invented 'spell-check'." Computer spell checking has enabled me to go from being a bad speller to a horrendous speller. If I sent this without spell checking I don't know if it would be readable. So now I need a content checker because weather/whether or through/thorough/threw may be correctly spelled but not used write (sic).

I see both sides of this argument. Bad spelling is the sign of low intelligence, but it is said that Einstein never knew his address and would be found wandering around Princeton. When asked why he never took the time to learn it he said; "Why take up space in the brain for something that I can look up in the phone book?". I take the same position regarding spelling, except now the computer replaces my formerly ever present dictionary.

I'm not the world's best speller either. And sometimes, spell checking doesn't help! As an example, see the following poem, author unknown.

Spell Chequer

Eye halve a spelling chequer,
it came with my pea sea,
it plainly marques four my revue
Miss steaks eye kin knot sea.

Eye strike a key and type a word
and weight four it two say.
weather eye am wrong oar write,
it shows me strait a weigh.

As soon as a mist ache is maid
it nose bee for two long,
and eye can put the error rite,
its rare lea ever wrong.

Eye have run this poem threw it,
I am shore your pleased two no,
its letter perfect awl the weigh
my chequer tolled me sew.

Einstein had trouble with fractions, dropped out of high school (but later returned and graduated), flunked out of college (but later graduated from another) and is rumored to have once tested in the 70s on an IQ test. After his work on the bomb and his nobel prize winning paper on the photo electic effect (he did NOT win because of Relativity), he was granted a research professorship at The Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, which is ironic because when he first got his doctorate, no one wanted him becasue of his brash personality.

If this post was not suppose to be serious, I apologize, but it get's old to keep reading profiles where that's accually listed was a negitive. It starts to get under my skin. I'm not stupid or lazy, I simply can't spell. Sucks to be me.

Synocense -> RE: UR SPEILLIN (11/8/2004 12:13:42 PM)

WOW! Incredible! I haven't been posting like I used to, but I have been reading and this thread really took me aback. All I have to say is, Thank Goodness it's not a math test!! I can spell, but as far as I'm concerned Pi is something to be eaten, period! Am I stupid, dumb, ignorant, lazy or disrespectful? I don't think so. I'm just terrible at math. : )

Huked on Fonics Wurked 4 Me .....too bad Elmo's Kozy Math Korner didn't.

Have a great day!

There is a big difference between someone who doesn't spell well and someone who is just lazy or thoughtless about it.

srahfox, you don't need to be a great speller to write. I edit other writers. I know which of them are trying and which are slacking off. I don't put much time into the slackers, I just suggest they fix it. Those who are trying I also try with and gradually we are all getting better.

If you learn the grammar you can let spellcheck catch your typos. You can't rely solely on spellcheck but it can be a good typo check.

srahfox -> RE: UR SPEILLIN (11/8/2004 2:32:56 PM)

Thank you, I use spellchecker ALOT. Accually when I'm writing I just keep it on so when I make a misstake I know it. I'm accually starting to go back to school so I can learn the grammer and everything else I missed.
Thanks for the encouragement.

I actually read a profile today where the person SPECIFICALLY said she didn't want to hear from ANYONE from Boston or New Jersey. So I guess it sucks to be me, too! [8|]

Yankeestick - who doesn't want to hear from anyone from Schenactady or Saskatchewan. [8D]

Nvernilla -> RE: UR SPEILLIN (11/8/2004 3:10:48 PM)

Well I even looked in my dictionary and I still don't know if its spelled retentive or retantive LOL Not really.

MsGothUk -> RE: UR SPEILLIN (11/8/2004 3:28:02 PM)

ackkkkkk..sod it, as long as its readable, who cares, I'm a lazy typer, I admit it!

jillwfsub4blkdom -> RE: UR SPEILLIN (11/8/2004 3:51:24 PM)

Laura,
i agree about some people being lazy. In fact, i rarely use spellcheck. If i am not sure how to spell a word, i typically will look it up in the dictionary. It seems to help my retention.

And even with English as your second language, you write more fluently than many native speakers.

I agree with you, completely! While I may make the odd typographical error now and again... well... frequently... I do try to at least *sound* as if I graduated high school!

To My way of thinking, a Dominant is... or damned well *ought* to be a person who is a cut above the norm. If one is not, what reason is there to serve that person? When I write online, as Lady Sonelle, a Dominant Woman, I come to the cyber place in My good clothes, heels, properly coiffed, dressed and accoutered. I demand a lot from My servitors, and for them, I give My best. That 'best' includes the effort put into grammar, punctuation, spelling and syntax. It is, after all, online, all they have to judge Me by until we meet.

I agree with the person who has, as their tagline, a protest against the use of the word 'dominate' for 'dominant'! I could go on about the various irritating things I see, but will, here, simply agree with you on spelling. At least spell checkers will get you in the right *neighbourhood* of a word's meaning!

Carry on, then.

Lady Sonelle

siamsa24 -> RE: UR SPEILLIN (11/9/2004 5:07:45 AM)

An even some of us who speak English as a first language are partially deaf and have a severe learning disability that makes it nearly impossible to learn the meaning of words, let alone how to spell them. This person also sees musical notes as colors, but that's another topic [:)]

I have stated directly in my profile that I know I have trouble with language and people still write to me and complain about it. I work very hard to get my writing to the level it is at right now and wish that people would not down me about it.
