OK, what is up with the spelling?

I am amazed at the spelling and grammar of some of the folks on here!

I mean how can you possibly be submissive, if you spell it sumissive, how can you expect dominance, when you spell it domanance?

I may be a bit picky, but spelling can be checked!

This doesn't even take into account the urs, mines, and uses, I am not looking for miracles!

IYM -

I am laughing with tears streaming down my face.

Spelling and how about correct grammatical construction - then and than are not interchangable as one indicates time and one is used for comparison (that one is really my pet peeve).

Careless typing is one thing but when the same mistake is made over and over, one does begin to wonder.

I'm with you IYM. My memory is a bit fuzzy on the details, but years ago I read something that purported to be a description of the demographics of the people in the BDSM scene. The upshot was that most people tended to be well-educated and in the upper middle class or above. Well, while I can't speak for incomes, my experience reading (or *attempting* to read sometimes) a lot that is posted leads me to really disagree with the educated part. My pet peeves include people who are, or seek, "dominate" people, people who are so lazy that they would type: "How r u?" and anyone who couldn't be bothered to check the spelling in their own profile.
I guess this just makes us "intolerant"

I know a lot of really intelligent people, Master being one of them who just really suck at spelling. If I had not cut him some slack on the spelling thing, I never would have met him for "suchi" and would have missed out.

Not everyone can spell, does not make them ignorant or stupid.

I find it incredibly rude to pick apart someones post due to grammar/spelling. If you have an issue with it move on.

Yes there are some poster's on the site that have terrible language skills. So bad you cannot understand a damn thing they type. Could be lack of formal education, a learning disability or 100 other things.

This is touchy subject for me, as I am not the best writer in the world either. I do have strong suites, this is not one of them.

Please remember there can and have been numerous reasons for others to have difficulty with grammar/spelling. Try to see the person before you put them down. And if you cannot understand a word they say, then skip it.. really does not matter does it??

I agree with Mod3 on the spelling/grammar bit.

HOWEVER, the one major pet peeve that I do have is with people who can not be bothered to even attempt to spell out words. Eg. "U" in place of "You", "UR" instead of "You are", etc. I understand that in this world of instant messaging and quicker than thought typing that perhaps it may be necessary, but in an email (or RealTime letter even) the ability to form your thoughts in a coherant method should far outweigh any time savings you may gain by shortcutting the language. U c what I mean?

I'm a writing snob. I work as a freelance writer, among other things, so writing skills matter to me. I can not consider a relationship with someone who mangles the language. It just gets under my last nerve and I really can't see them as 'educated' people. I know it's not fair, not everyone can spell or remember all the grammar and punctuation rules. But, it's something that makes a big difference for me. That's just how it is. Of course, my best friend is the typo queen. I don't correct her, we just laugh at some of her better typos. :)

Part of the problem with what you are quoting is that it is a study from many years ago. I will not delve into the conventions of netspeak, as there is another topic currently active which discusses this, but insofar as crude manglings of the language by those who do not know any better (as opposed to those who obey the traditions of some subculture), I would point out that in the last ten years a great many people have gained access to the internet. Many of them are not well educated, even by what laughably passes for education here in the United States. They are still middle class, more or less, but even that is beginning to change, now that analog-capable computers are becoming relatively cheap.

Mind you, some of my best friends, highly intelligent and educated people, can not spell. They mangle the same words the same ways every time they write to me. I probably have my unfair share of poorly spelled words as well, but I try to make up for that by sheer obfuscation, through the mechanism of particularly obtuse and flowery prose. However, in my defense, my word program was damage by a virus last year, and so I am actually unable to spell check. I keep a dictionary close at hand at all times, but some things do slip past my watchful eye.

Yeah. Unfortunately, I managed to lose the title "freelance iconoclast" when I went up to Twisted. Well, maybe I'll get it back with my first paddle. It'll take even me a while to go from one paddle to two.

I so agree. There was a similar thread about this a little while ago. You've never seen so many people bashing others, because of spelling, typing skills, and language. I do agree to some point. While talking to a potential Dom, if I can't understand him, there's really no sense in pursuing it much further. Yet, you really should be a bit forgiving in that area. Not all are professional journalists. Not all were the spelling bee champions of 5th grade. In short, give a little slack. We all make mistakes. I'm sure, you'll find grammar mistakes in this post alone.

I'm a college-educated person but what gets me is when others use big long words that I never heard of in their posts and I can't follow along without a dictionary. IE, obfuscation, what in the heck does that mean? (I'm totally teasing you Suleiman

As a BAD speller I have to defend myself. I went to thirteen school in 12 years. I dare most people to learn anything and do the same thing. I try really hard to be a good speller, people the can spell easily have no idea how hard and embarrassing it is. If I don't know a word, I try to find a way to spell it, or use something else. You know, it doesn't always work. Sometimes I post something misspelled. I am constantly trying to memorize those words I don't know. I'm a writer, that's what I do, that's my passion. It is the most frustrating thing in the world to not be able to even tell what I've done wrong in a story. I have never been able to spell, sounding words out just doesn't work half of the time, it took me 6 months to remember how to spell beautiful.
Just an FYI for anybody who wonders how intelligent I am, I dropped out of school and didn't get my GED for 6 years. I didn't study for it, I didn't take any of the warm up classes, I just took the tests. I passed it. Not one problem. I dare most high school grads to do the same thing. If you checked my grades in school (When they weren't just flunking me for missing days, hurray for Florida and a drunk mom) I always got at least a B.
So if you don't like the fact I've accidentally misspelled something, have a little compassion and remember I'm trying hard at something that comes easy for you. If you can't do that. Get over it. You can't properly judge someone by their spelling. If you pass me up because of that.. what kind of person does that say you are.
So everyone knows. there were three words I had to look up in this post.

Words mean a lot to me, and I don't like to see them misused, or abused. I love language as it varies by individual, and it absolutely does. I can also tell the difference when I receive an email, or read a post, in whether or not the composer was on a thoughtful roll, or just being sloppy and careless.

I have no trouble at all reading well thought posts. I suppose because I know that while they are being typed the mind is moving at a rapid pace. So when I'm reading the post I'm not concerned with the spelling, or period/comma placement as much as the content of the post. I would hope that others do the same with mine, because they believe I have something of value to contribute in spite of the occasional spelling or punctuation/grammatical error/oversight. When I respond to the post, if I do, I won't correct any errors, unless I can do so in a humorous way. But my sense of humor is rather dry, so I avoid that usually.

As for those who are careless and sloppy...I just skip them.

It came with my PC.
It plainly marks four my revue
Mistakes I cannot sea.
I've run this poem threw it;
I'm sure your pleased too no.
It's letter-perfect in it's weigh.
My checker tolled me sew.
