It was such a problem that one month we had a task-force of officers who went out round the streets until they found idling cars, finding the owners and telling them off. As in 'I've been stood out here three minutes with your car, it would take me four seconds to get in and drive away'. It was mostly opportunistic but there were one or two more affluent areas where it appeared people were hanging around to try and get an expensive car (which is arguably preferable to them burgling your house to get the keys, which often happens with expensive models).

I've never seen a car with an auto starter that works without unlocking the car so I don't know if they're not popular here or if I'm too poor to know about them. My (admittedly over-sensitive) instincts would still be to not use it, as smashing a window is no big deal to someone prepared to steal a car anyway. Every little helps though.

The new cars that are all digital and can even be run by an app on your iphone, can stay locked as it is remotely started. Not sure of other cars though. I think there are a lot of new cars out though that are compatible with the new remote starters.

I would have done something similar to what you did.
Even living in the (currently frigid) Northeast, a running car in a closed garage is lethal.

I have a high tolerance for looking like a too-careful person and would rather feel a little grimace than the regret of not having acted and someone ended harmed.

Ours is the other way around. You can't auto start the vehicle without hitting the 'doors lock' button on the phob first.

Somebody breaking the window to steal the vehicle would have about the same luck as any vehicle that had no key. The steering column would remain locked so the steering wheel won't turn.

Thanks, I feel the same way about being on the safe side.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that many of us here, including me and the neighbor in question, leave our garages open when the cars aren't in there. As I also stated, most of the garages are communal. So no, these are not secret hideaways with caches of valuables inside.
