i love the blue pit puppy pic ( mouthful for sure to say out loud ) i have a 5 year old sable ( Cuda ) that was a rescue. she's a cuddler but has a strong dislike for men in baseball style caps. never bitten anyone or hurt anyone... just gets into protection mode. if i could post a picture i would. her tail and ears are not cropped. i'm told that the cropping ears and tails developed because it gave the fighting dogs less to grab on to. terrible right?

Technically breagha, pits should never have their tails cropped. They (the tails) were used by the old time pit men as a means to safely grab on to their dogs when in a fight. (now fighting, that's disgusting). The ear cropping of certain breeds was done for utility purposes. The Doberman, bred by Herr Louis Doberman in Germany, was the ONLY breed originally bred for the purpose of fighting a human being. Hence the ears were cropped, tail docked to give the "bad guy" less to grab onto. Many other breeds were cropped/docked for purely asthetic reasons: such as the MinPin, boxer, great dane, etc. It became the fashion of the kennel club and many years ago you stood virtually no chance of your dog winning unless they were cropped/docked. Opinion in this country is changing..... dogs with natural ears/tails are now winning in the show ring. Many breeders and owners still prefer the clean/sharp look of a cropped ear (dobermans, pits, etc). Vets today have stopped cropping/docking or charge an arm and a leg IF you insist on having it done. Reason: Not cruelty. Most folks don't know how to care for the ear after surgery and blame the vet when it does not stand correctly. (that came from my vet when we discussed cropping my Dobe bitch). Do I feel it's "cruel"? Not when done under anesthesia by a qualified vet who gives pain meds after surgery, & the owner is fanatically clean with care & taping of the ears afterwards. Docking? Well.......I admit I'm more squimish on that. The pups are three days old when it's done. No anesthesia is used. It takes a few seconds......they start nursing immediately and it's over. Still......No dog of mine will go thru docking again. Of course I am no longer breeding dogs either. Hope that helps! ~servos cor~

From what I understand the working dogs often had their tails docked to keep them from being stepped on by the livestock. Although, it has since come out that the dogs actually use their tails as a rudder and it improves their agility.

Less for opponent to chew on and they lose their ears in battle eventually anyway. Longer crops were fashion evolved from te function of a battle crop. It held true to the fighting breeds' look. you're welcome breagha. Basically, at this point, it boils down to a matter of personal preference and your wallet. :) People are getting more and more used to the natural ears on pits and dobes... and tails on the Rotts/Dobes. The imported dogs from Europe have been natural for nearly 10 yrs or so. ~servos cor~

i agree imp ( can i call you that? ) i'm a firm believer that with all dogs the owners need to know them and their body language. for example... when my pit is feeling uncomfortable or anxious she takes on a certain head position. keeping her past experiences in mind i tend to try to take notice of this so she doesn't snap out of fear. she's a cuddler and a lover and i don't believe she would outright attack anyone without provocation. just like any animal ( including people for the most part ) but i like to keep an eye out just in case

The problem is manifold, first is that many states have virtually no animal cruelty laws at all (cock fighting only became illegal in the entire US 4 years ago). Second is the kennel and breed clubs which stick to the 19th century breed standards despite overwhelming evidence of harm to the animals. Finally many breeders care about nothing but the puppies sale price and will crop the ears rather than educate the buyers. Exactly this!!

Pound for pound, I think 250 lbs of vicious little Chihuahuas is something I would not want to confront. I am prejudice and I love most variations of the Mastiff breed. My dad liked the Bullmastiff. I liked the big old English ones. My friend Archie breeds and shows the Cane Corso. I inherited the most loveable red nose that came with my slave. The mastiff family of dog breeds are all a loveable bunch... and the red nose is awesome whether cropped and regal or cute and floppy. Number one looks like he's had his ears left alone and he's not disfigured but you prefer the disfigured one. From what I have read about canine ear cropping, it is a painful, mutilating and disfiguring process for any animal but so long as people still like the look dogs ears will continue to be cropped.
