Okay while I am very new to the scene and expected there to be quite a bit I did not know. Creating a profile was somewhat challenging. I guess I could google the terms I am unfamilar with I would rather get peoples takes on it. I am not big on labeling as each person is there own entity but I simply do not have the ability to get to know each person to understand what they identify with the most. That said I understand top, bottom, dom , submissive and sexual orentations. I do not understand switch and such nore the many many other terms. I just feel a lot more at home here.

This was my first day on here I found it exceptionally educational. A dictionary would have come in handy but as it turned out the men were well able, and willing to explain their terminology.

I tried that twice, Maria... even came back and rechecked my spelling with yours, and it didn't take me anywhere.

I was trying to find out what the word "sock" meant... besides being something in my drawer! LOL

I think that was a misspelling of "Fetipedia".

"Sock", aka "sock puppet", is internet slang for an extra account somebody makes on a site like this to make it look like people like or agree with them. A fake internet supporter.

Ah well that's just an internet term not specific to this site.

A sock is what we call it when someone has more than one account to post on a site. As in 'sock puppet' - it has no mind of it's own since it is actually another poster working it. Does that make sense?

Sock is usually a negative term - generally posters might be accused of being a sock if they've just joined the site and jump in mid-debate to stick up for and agree with everything one person says. We might suspect it is in fact the same poster making a sock-puppet account to support their point of view.

I take it you've seen the 'who has a sock' thread? There it is mostly being used for people who have two accounts for whatever reason, not necessarily trying to trick anyone.

LMAO
Well I certainly messed up THAT last reply (post#7)!
Nothing like posting something with nothing in it! OH, dear...I'm sorry.

graceadieu said it was making it look like people like or agree with them...?

And Athena? You asked if what you said made sense to me and well no...actually it didn't. (LOL) (I keep warning people I need maps for these things!)

I don't know how something has no mind of its own if someone is behind it, although I can understand that some people establish two different accounts for the same website...something I won't be doing because I'm obviously having a difficult enough time with this one! LOL

So I'll understand it as one person with two accounts and feel satisfied. :)

Thank you for both for being so nice,
Ms. Esoteric

An example of a sock account, just to clarify for you.

User A posts something that User B, C, D, E, F disagree with. User A is adamant about said original post so User A makes a new account, we'll call that one User Z. So User A, disguised as User Z, logs in to the discussion and agrees with the original post to make it look like a new user is also in agreement with User A.

Typically, people forget which account they've logged in with and post something which then outs both accounts as being one and the same.

Nothing for "switch" on http://www.fetipedia.com/en/?s=switch

According to http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=switch -

A person who vaccilates between dominant and submissive roles within sexual relations.
#1 Are you dom or sub?
#2 I like both. I'm switch.

Don't get hung up on terminology. Just use them as guideposts to separate people into very broad categories to find out who might have interests compatible with your own. There is no exactness to BDSM terms - most of it is in the eye of the beholder.

LOL I have never heard of that one before, But on a writing site that has message boards and people I know personally on it. I did create a separate account just for writing. I have never had bad reviews. I cringe every time I post expecting someone to say god this sucks. Never happens, and trust me they are not kind with bad writing. So I am not sure why anyone knowing it is me makes me so nervous but it does. LOL

Vacilates??? That implies indecision. Myself I know exactly who I am & under what circumstances I am D or s, default is set on D unless & until the ex poly appears on the porch in knee pads

Switches either sometimes want to be in control and sometimes want to be controlled, or they sometimes want to top and sometimes want to bottom. Of course, they could want all of it.

Socks can also be for kinder and gentler purposes. If your partner is also on here and you have a problem, you might want to use a sock so they don't feel upset that you're shared something private but you still get advice.

There are so many terms. It would make it easier if you were to ask specific questions about each thing that you don't understand. An open-ended question about terms is far too broad.

Also, I've always found that the terms are pretty unimportant. You'll never get kinksters to agree on the definition of most terms. So don't waste your time trying. Instead, focus on the things that YOU enjoy. Learn more about the things that YOU fantasize about.

IMO, as a newbie, it's far more important to understand yourself than it is to learn a bunch of terms that really don't pertain to you. For example, it might be nice to learn about giving enemas. But if that's not something that turns you or your partner on, then you might want to wait until later to learn about that. Right now, it's probably best to focus on the things that are relevant to YOUR relationship.

BTW, have you attended a munch? That's always a good thing for a newbie to do.
