Focus,
Using millimetres to describe everything is something
I've only really know tradies to do, most people who
haven't had much contact with that stuff, I've found,
talk mainly in CM.

*madly waves to everyone across the states, across the pond and to those on the other side of the world*

I just think that's so cool!!![:D]

littlewonder -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/18/2013 2:56:31 PM)

It's cold and breezy and about 30 degrees farenheit.

They are calling for about 4 inches of snow this weekend and next week is supposed to get below normal temps.

LafayetteLady -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/18/2013 3:04:15 PM)

Really mild winter in NJ.  Supposed to be in the low 40s the next couple of days.  For this time of year, that's almost like a heat wave.

littlewonder -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/18/2013 3:06:01 PM)

Yup. We've had it pretty easy on the east coast so far this winter. I'm not complaining. Hopefully the snow passes us this weekend.

kallisto -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/18/2013 6:14:23 PM)

We had 9 straight days of above 70 then yesterday we were in the 50s with rain. Supposed to get to the upper 20s tongiht but sunny and in the 60s this weekend. That's living in the South for you. We don't know whether we are coming or going in the "winter".

LadyPact said 7.5 cms of snow rather than 3 inches.

Hey, dammit! Be happy that I converted at all. I'm one of those stuck in My ways Americans. [;)]

Yeah, but I'm thinking you didn't need to consult a conversion chart to do it - that you probably had enough familiarity with the metric system to do it in your head?

My point being that while Americans are innovative in their own right, they're not so eager to embrace good ideas (like the metric system) that foreigners thought of, first. Unless it's weaponry, of course....

LaTigresse -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/19/2013 1:08:00 PM)

As with the summer we had and last winter, this winter has been abnormally warm and dry. So dry they've been doing historic dredging on the river to keep barges moving and I am still watering trees. We've only had one snow and it's gone. Today's high is supposed to be 50+ F. It's 54 at the moment. Tonight the bottom is supposed to drop out of the thermometer. Tomorrow's forecasted high is 21 and Monday's 12. Lows in the single digits and windy. But, back up in the 30's and even 40+ by next weekend. No precip in the forecast. Two very weird winters in a row.

Well yeah, those who talk in CMs aren't usually those who work with precise measurements. It's their "tell".... lol

Turns out I'm a "tradie" and have worked all my life in the trade and around all manner of other allied trades. And nothing creates the potential for mistakes like constantly using a decimal point (86.3 cm X 115.8 cm) when it's not necessary (863 X 1158). It's natural for humans to abbreviate....

Trust me, if you're up on a roof calling out a size to a helper on the ground, you don't wanna be adding unnecessary decimal points to the lines of communication. And in my trade (fitting & machining) we work to hundredths of a millimetre (.01mm) - you use decimals only when you have to.

Dunno if I'd call it rain but it's drizzled all night to the tune of 5mm (NOT 0.5cm lol) in my gauge. Appreciate what you get, I s'pose, but I'd like it to "drizzle" at least about 30-50mm more. Yesty's paper said Friday (47deg C) was the highest ever recorded maximum in Newcastle. In Sydney, too. That's stuff of the outback, not the freakin' coast. The official temp from the weather bureau was 45.2. Probably got better recording gear than my store bought thermometer or it's that they're not from where I live.

Anyway, wet and low 20's today - YESSSSSSS....!

Focus.

Ok, since I'm not so familiar with Fahrenheit, I clicked my own conversion program to get an idea. Bestest ever program anyone ever emailed me, btw - and only 568kb...!

Anyway, I've always reckoned my ideal-perfect temp to be outdoors on a sunny day, shirtless and doing constructive type stuff is about 22deg C. That converts to 71.6 F. So your 50F (10.0 C) is still quite cool. Ok, it's cold to me.... lol But you don't seem to be doing it as tough as most other Americans who've posted here ('cept OsideGirl).

We're probably having what I'd consider a more traditional Summer - hot and dry. The last 2-3 were generally milder and a lot wetter. It's certainly makin' up "lost ground" this Summer.... Most of the country is "on fire" with my own state currently having almost a hundred blazes still burning out of control....

True, but I happen to think metric is actually easier. The math is certainly simpler.

I'm glad you got some heat relief.

jlf1961 -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/19/2013 1:59:53 PM)

First of all I use the metric system when shooting.

And yes in some ways it is easier.

At least in kilometers per hour, you can imagine going faster than you are.

LadyPact -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/19/2013 2:05:14 PM)

How can one argue against increments of ten?

Yeah but it's not so good like for when I yousta lift weights. I'd warm up on the bench press with 15-20 reps of 100 kilos. Not nearly so impressive as the equivalent 220lbs.... lol

Look, I am a 51 year old Texan, I can argue with anyone about anything. I mean seriously, I am a pro gun democrat Catholic who feels the government does not have the authority to regulate abortion even though I am against it.

I still fuss at the Liquor store owner about whiskey being sold by the SAE system and metric system. A fifth is not a fifth anymore.

What really chaps my ass is the fact that new cars have both SAE and Metric nuts and bolts.

It is also irritating that groceries are sold by both, some using the SAE system, some using the metric system.

In fact I have, being half serious, suggested going to the biblical measuring system.

I even argue with my 11 month old great nephew. Dont have a clue as to what he is saying yet, I dont speak infant, but he is so passionate about it that he must be taking a stand on something.

As for intervals of ten, it is too simple. Humanity thrives on complications. I mean look at what we do all the time, humans can complicate the simplest things, I mean how many different ways are available to women to have a baby?

So, might I suggest we have a good natured argument about something, the color of the sky perhaps, whether or not president Obama is an extraterrestrial?

Maybe we can argue about the pros and cons of making it legal for people of 1/4 native american blood to either buy wives with horses, or just go on raids and steal them?

Like I said, I am an old geezer type critter who can and does argue about just about anything.[:D]

Shropshire, uk. 3 inches of snow, still falling. minus 2.
And my son tells me i'm mad, i went out and made a snowman, and i dont have children at home as an excuse. [:)]

Minus 3 and about the same level of snow here in Bristol, England. I've been busy bashing clout nails into my climbing boots, then squeezing their heads into 'spikes'. Works very well. 'Course, it would have helped if I'd bought slip-on snow-grippers for them, but that would have taken *organisation*. Beneath that - well, we Brits are expert at handling rain - but no other kind of weather, eh? [;)]

LadyPact -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/19/2013 2:34:46 PM)

Oh, God. Not politics, please. Good heavens that should be torture for someone who disobeys.

See, we can't argue on some things. We're on the same side as the gun debate, the abortion debate, and I don't know what else.

What's your stance on margaritas?

TenderTorment -> RE: What's *Your* Weather Like? (1/19/2013 2:37:51 PM)

Ok we just had our first flurry of snow this winter, nothing excessive, around an inch where I am but around 10 inches in some part of the country. Now the thing that gets me about the Uk is how much everyone gets there panties in a pickle over such an insignificant amount of snow, honestly, the news makes it sound like an apocalypse, public infrastructure grinds to a halt, schools close, road networks become impassable people panic buy at the supermarket and generally act like buffoons over it. Other countries live and function with much more severe weather but we seem to go all gaga over it.

As we say in Scotland......Wha's tha aw abooot?

It depends on the tequila used, there is one bar and grill locally that uses one of the "gourmet" tequilas and the margaritas are spectacular.

But in all honesty I prefer to drink either single malt scotch or Canadian whiskey. tequila with mexican food, and margaritas with a jalapeno bacon cheese burger...

Hmmm.... wondering how much dill weed to put with my panties to get a pickle????
