Have you ever had a tag office demand more money after getting your renewal sticker? When I received my financial aid refund last week (I'm in college), I went to my local tag office for an estimate on my vehicle taxes. I was pleasantly surprised when I learned my taxes were lower than I thought they would be. I asked them if they were sure that was the correct amount because I thought it would be higher. They double checked and told me they were sure. So I decided to pay my taxes and get my renewal sticker a month early. Today, I got a letter in the mail stating that my vehicle taxes were figured wrong. I told them I had already paid and received my renewal sticker. Now they're wanting me to go in and pay more. It's not my fault they screwed up. I even had them double check before I paid them. If people already have their stickers, what do they do, repo them? When people make mistakes, they are expected accept the consequences of those mistakes. Why isn't it the same for local government (tag offices)?

Can't fight city hall, if they believe you owe them money, they will either collect it or make your life a living hell. I'd just pay it, around here they love to suspend drivers licenses for $25 tickets.

How can your payment have been wrong? It's their duty to see as to the amount. It must be correct. You can prove it. See the sticker?

It's the government.... welcome to socialism/fascism/corporatism all rolled all in to one. In other words, you're a peon like the rest of us and you have no rights to object to anything that the government wants out of you. You have a problem with it? Then get politically involved, and if you won't then I guess you'll have to live with it.

The vehicle is a 2010 Ford Escape. I already paid $311 to renew my tag. The lady I talked to couldn't even tell me how much more I'm expected to pay. They're still waiting for the amounts to be re-figured. I hope there's not a $200 difference.

Hmm, that's interesting. Do they really calculate it differently for each person? That seems like there could be those kind of problems a lot, then. Here in Maryland, the tag renewal fee is the same for all cars (I think SUVs are extra?), so you know upfront how much it's going to be.

ETA: Also, the prospect of maybe paying $511 for a tag renewal fee, wow. Here it's $128.

Okay, before the state of texas decided my untreated back problem made me a menace other drivers, the registration on my Dodge Crew Cab 3/4 ton diesel was $450.

Now a similar vehicle, without the diesel engine and four wheel drive would have been $295 for the same year model.

Both with Farm tags.

Standard tags would have added another $175 to the registration.
