Pennsylvania girl, 5, suspended for threatening to shoot girl with pink toy gun that blows soapy bubbles

A 5-year-old Pennsylvania girl who told another girl she was going to shoot her with a pink Hello Kitty toy gun that blows soapy bubbles has been suspended from kindergarten....

Ficker [the family's lawyer] says Mount Carmel Area School District officials said the girl made the threat on Jan. 10 as she waited for a school bus with friends. A school official overheard the remark and searched the girl's backpack and did not find the Hello Kitty gun, he said.

The next day, the girls involved were 'interrogated' by school officials, Ficker said. By the time the girl was done speaking to administrators about the incident, she was crying, he said. A teacher called out the girl in front of her class and told her police may get involved, he said.

And they say gun owners are nuts.

K, this is a joke right?

It has got to be a joke....

Wait this is the United States of Paranoia....

Its not a joke.

And the newest threat to national security is unveiled. Terrorist Tykes! The Hello Kitty gun was not found as it was in stealth mode, set to full auto and the safety off. How anyone will get through the day under such threat of extinction. We're doomed.

Moonhead -> RE: School Acts on Terrorist Threat (1/20/2013 5:49:43 AM)

If they didn't find the gun and notice that it was a toy (as the article in OP states), then they probably thought they'd be better off with a ludicrous overreaction that upset one kid, rather than running the risk she might be able to get hold of a real gun of her parents' and shoot somebody else.
Hell, at least they didn't have some "volunteer armed guard" give the kid the third degree...

Nope, not a joke anymore. Stupid? Absolutely. But welcome to our new safety net world! One of my 9 year old nephews had to speak to a counselor and they in turn spoke to his parents recently because he talked about shooting his .22 rifle on the range in the town he lives in and that was considered a possible red flag. This despite the fact that he is well liked, gets along well with the students and staff, and is a straight A student and lives in a town that still takes time off for deer hunting season.

As I said, the United States of Paranoid America.

I do believe that with the exception of a few people on these boards, the United States population is in dire need of a FUCKING LOT OF PSYCHIATRIC HELP.

tazzygirl -> RE: School Acts on Terrorist Threat (1/20/2013 6:32:18 AM)

Oh ffs.. this isnt new. Kids have been suspended and even expelled for taking a knife to school to cut foods and didnt threaten anyone. The school way overreacted. But this had nothing to do with the gun or the child and everything to do with the bullshit "no tolerance" policies.

sounds hauntingly like these people who want to ban guns doesnt it?

Personally I think we should ban cars too because people have used them as a weapon to kill both themselves and several others on high speed freeways before they were stopped.

tazzygirl -> RE: School Acts on Terrorist Threat (1/20/2013 7:15:39 AM)

Again, I think you should be allowed to own anything your little bleeding heart desires.

You should also have to secure the weapon.

And be responsible for any injury that occurs as a result of an improperly secured or maintained weapon.

Lord knows, those arent the rules now.

Tazzy, it goes further than the "no tolerance" policies. These educators (and I use that word with reservation) use NO common sense. A two to three minute conversation with the little girl could have cleared this up. I am sure that she would have been overjoyed to tell all about her new toy bubble gun. The way THIS was handled, I am not so certain that the little girl's due process rights were not violated with the amount of time that she was interrogated and the fact that there was NO parent present. Pointing a chicken nugget, using your finger to make a gun to play cops and robbers, and drawing comic book pictures at school are NOT the signs of a kid going off the deep end.

These educators using the defense of, "it is the policy," and "I was only following orders," are using the same defenses that did not work at Nuremberg and should NOT work in these cases either. As Mr. Reynolds comments, "Tar and Feathers."

tazzygirl -> RE: School Acts on Terrorist Threat (1/20/2013 7:22:06 AM)

I am in no way supporting what happened here. This is insane to expel elementary school students for these types of incidents.

that "infringes" on its readiness and use in an emergency.

tazzygirl -> RE: School Acts on Terrorist Threat (1/20/2013 7:29:25 AM)

LOL

How? You mean you need 21 guns out and ready to shoot at any second? Do tell me how that policy "infringes" on anything? Show me the unconstitutionality of insisting a gun owner properly secures his weapons.

someone breaks through your door and you have to excuse yourself while you find the key to your trigger lock.

You nor anyone singing that tune have ever experienced any thing like this. It oft times happens in fractions of a second.

I supose we could impose a number law that when someone wants to break in or otherwise do you harm that they are required to take a number and wait till you unlock your arms to shoot back and service them.

and what someone needs is not up to you or anyone else to decide is it?

more over the top democracy?

I did not think that you were. I just wanted to point out that it goes further than "no tolerance." I did not disagree with what you had said, I just wanted to expand upon it.

I though that was the cause of the problems? How can it also be the solution?

Nosathro -> RE: School Acts on Terrorist Threat (1/20/2013 7:46:19 AM)

I have to admit this does sound a bit over zealous of the school. When I worked in Juvenile Hall from time to time in searches we find pictures of guy with guns, some of them were of the ward (as we called them) other of friends and family, the pictures were taken away and the ward had a write and had their privileges taken away. I recall a thread about a student who had a history of threating students (I believe) but some made commemts about why the school did nothing. We live in an inperfect world and we make mistakes. If you want to have safe schools, there are going to mistakes, but is it not best when considering safety of children best to error on the side of saftey? Then again sometimes there are real concerns...

Who said it had to be trigger locks?

You are assuming many things.

Tell me, what else are you assuming while you dodge my question about constitutionality?
