Victorian Protocol? - 1/21/2013 9:06:26 AM

Hey all,

A little bit of background. I have been doing quite a bit of reading on Victorian households especially in regards to serving staff and this research has led me to seeking an individual (either Male or Female) who would interested in training me/using me in this capacity. But maybe I'm not doing the right kind of search? It seems there's little to no interest in the subject, so how could I go about "reconstructing" a set of rituals and protocols based on the social mores of the era?

Are there any resources I am overlooking?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

There are a few groups for this interest on fetlife so that might be one way of finding people who are interested. I don't know how many will be local to you. I don't personally know anyone who does this although I can see the appeal.

As for protocols, I'd suggest looking up Mrs Beeton's book and see what she has to say about managing servants and etiquette. There are lots of online resources about Victorian social norms but a lot seem to focus on the middle classes rather than their interactions with their servants. Still with some clever googling you should be able to find a good base of information which you can then sift through and find what would work for you.

If I am understanding you correctly, you wish to be a service submissive only.. I don't know much about how popular the Vic. household kink is but I am sure if you list that you are looking for what you just said, though be sure to say if you allow sex or not, you may find others into it...   Fetlife is a little better in finding groups based on a kink.. I would join then search the groups for Victorian Households..

Dang... I don't think IronBear is around anymore.
He had a Victorian household if I remember correctly.

I am sure there are books that go into detail about the service protocols for that period.
I did a yahoo search and I found this :http://www.tattonpark.org.uk/PDF/Victorian%20Information%20Sheet.pdf

Not sure if it will help you.
But I am sure you could find something.

Good luck!

I'm aware of the Fetlife groups and loved them, but I left due to unchecked Anti-Semitism on the site. I can deal with a lot of shit, as a black woman I have to, but my husband is Jewish and I draw a line there; so for philosophical reasons I withdrew both my monetary support and patronage.

I do thank you for the hints though, I can probably find some yahoo or google groups that fit the bill.

Thanks for this resource! It could definitely help me set up a "daily schedule" for my own household so I can build my own discipline.

Maybe shake down Amazon or some used dvd outlet (it should be a cheap sleeper) and get the movie, 'Gosford Park'  (contains intrigue; a plot) but it does everything from the servants perspectives, foibles, protocols, jobs, heirarchy and so on.

And contains the 'BIG' line as far as service goes.  (spoken by Helen Mirrin, see if you can catch it).

I wont give it away (the line, that is).  Other than that, I may not be a pushover, but I can be had.

I used to have a friend in Pittsburgh who was a Victorian slave and she ran groups to teach it in that area and at bdsm events. It seemed to revolve around things like serving tea, manners and etiquette, being seen but not heard, knowing what is to be done before the Master even orders it.

This was about 10 years ago though and not sure if she is even around anymore. The links that everyone provided will help you I think.

It depends upon what you mean by "serving staff." Those who served the dining table were always male and worked under the butler. There was a very strict code of who was allowed to work in the various positions within the household and those were always based upon gender. Each had specific tasks they were responsible for and were forbidden to do anything that was not a part of their official position. For instance, a man was almost always responsible for carrying hot water to the bathing chamber, but forbidden to bathe a woman.

Females were the housekeepers, cooks (men filled this position now and then), kitchen maids, scullary maids, between maids, etc. Of course, the highest maids were Chamber Maids and assigned to the ladies of the manor to assist with dressing, hair, wardrobe management, and bathing. They also acted as escorts when thier lady needed to got outdoors and a male relative was not available.

Maids never, ever poured tea. The lady of the manor did.

Here's a servant listing:
Land Steward
House Steward
Upper Staff: Butler, Housekeeper, Cook or Chef, Lady's Maid and Valet
Lower Staff: First Footman, Second Footman, Head Nurse, Footman, Chamber Maids, Parlour Maids, House Maid, Between Maid, Nurse, Under Cook, Kitchen Maid, Scullery Maid, Laundry Maid, Page or Tea Boy

Head Groom or Stable Master, Groom, Stable Boy, Head Gardener, Game Keeper, Grounds Keepers, Governess, Gate Keeper

Let me know if you would like some links to particular areas of interest.

I don't know how that link will work when it really didn't address things that could really be applied to modern high protocols within the confines of power exchange dynamics or our lifestyle events.

Silly me. And up 'till now I thought a Victorian Household was one with that collanade porch, high peaked roofs, ornate gables, and clapboard siding with shuttered windows (better for D/s play sights and sounds to stay inside, I fear).
Inside, it seems they have the great high-ceilinged chandeliered banquet hall, offshoot rooms for smoking, playing the piano, or spanking the servants, and small bedrooms sans closets so that nobody can hide in the armoire making it so that everyone is out of the closet.
Beside the kitchen, or perhaps in the basement dungeon, would be the plain door to the servants quarters - a place where I'd like to visit for my noonday training session - so that all servants knew their place at all times, naked and on their knees.

Of course, I must be amiss, so, googling, I find this nice description of "Victorian Life".

Digging a little deeper into the D/s aspect of Victorian Housholds, I find the "rules of Victorian or Edwardian D/s households" which says (and I quote):
quote:

An ideal companion provides her master with social entertainment and company; accompanies him to public and private events where her wit, grace and style reflects on his household; and acts as his social secretary, dealing with invitations and arrangements.

However that learned description cautions:
quote:

"There are a cluster of roles who serve the master's pleasure, by providing objects for his sexual, SM or bondage desires. These roles of concubine, odalisque, plaything or pet serve no practical purpose, but are of great importance to D/s dynamic of the household and the master's reasons for providing it."

So there. Now I have a semblance of what a Victorian Household must be like. Now it's time to learn the protocol...

Storm of Love (literotica)
Of Lords and Ladies (literotica)

Smaller Victorian households in the UK (especially later in the century) would often have just one, female, servant called a 'maid of all work'. That phrase is worth Googling - see e.g. http://www.victorianlondon.org/professions/housemaid.htm

Altering to gender-neutral "servant", I like the title. :) Thanks for the link.

Not since the end of 2011.
Damn shame, too.

Somewhere around this joint, somebody had a thread that included a link to his written description of his household. I did a quick search earlier today and couldn't find it. I've got it stuck in My head that the proper name was Bruin Cottage but I'm just not finding it.

OP, it will take some work but see what you can find from the search feature from a gent named IronBear and a gal named CallaFirestorm. Those are the past two posters that I would recommend.
