I may not be in the right section for this one but I am hoping this is the best place to have a good discussion on the subject.

Rather than the gun debate, how many of you think some of these shootings are a grasp for fame? When watching these news events about vicious killings, how far up in importance do you think the killers are prioritizing notoriety? Is this more about the 'blaze of glory' mindset?

Politesub53 -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 3:27:04 PM)

Its a valid point for some of them. Hence the myriad of copycat killings that always seems to follow a notorious event.

hlen5 -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 3:36:05 PM)

That is exactly what they are going for, LP. Read either "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin DeBecker. There's another book I'm thinking of by someone named Paul Ressler, or Rensler. He's an FBI profiler.

kdsub -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 4:08:53 PM)

I don’t believe fame is the right word… I would say in their warped minds it is revenge.

I think they are. That is the main reason I think they should stop reporting their names in the media. Maybe if they think no one will ever hear who did it, they might reconsider going out this way. Of course the media will not take the chance of losing a few dollars regardless of whether it might help or not.

Level -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 5:29:25 PM)

LP, I don't think there is that much desire for fame or noteriety (though there are exceptions). Mostly, it's one form of madness or another. Lashing out at hurts, real or imagined, is the prime motivator, imo.

subrob1967 -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 7:15:54 PM)

Infamy is a better term than fame.

slvemike4u -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 7:27:06 PM)

Motivation is besides the point.....the ease with which one of these idiots arms himself in this country is really the only discussion worth having ,everything else is nothing but a bogus distraction and deflection.

are you kidding?

it gets MUCH easier than that!

How about a nice fire cracker in a sack of flower when you need a little extra fresh air for your home? or school?

How easy is that?

we live in a prozak society.

to many profit margins would get hurt to fix this.

otherwise I agree with that.

I agree with this. The shooters frequently are suicidal. They are mentally damaged people. To suggest they are seeking fame implies they are thinking rationally and without compulsion. Doubtful about their rationality.

While I appreciate you taking the time to post, this particular thread is about motivation. Please do not say the topic of the thread is besides the point.

Thank you.

I'm inclined to mostly agree with Level and vincent on this. It seems that for the most part these are people that are, in one way or another, an outcast or someone kind of living on the fringes of society. Others go into the workplaces of their exes to get revenge, or are disgruntled employees or ex-employees. Some may be in it for the fame, but I personally don't feel that fame is a prime motivator for most of them.

theshytype -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 8:27:40 PM)

Some of them, yes. The movie theater shooter comes to mind as someone seeking infamy. He carefully planned his attack and was not personally connected to any of the victims (I don't believe). Although an obvious sociopath, he seemed to be thinking fairly rationally no matter how fucked up his rationale was.

Sorry LP,but that happens to be my honest opinion.
And since this is a message board and you posed the question nothing says I can't drop in and offer my take on the subject.....which I honestly believe amounts to nothing more than the mental masturbation that gun enthusiasts would like to offer up as red meat rather than have an honest(intellectually speaking) discussion.

There I have had my say......now absent you once more telling me how I don't belong here...I probably won't be back(this seems to be a bit of a formula ,eh,I drop in,have my say ...fully intending to ignore it from that point on.....than you tell me I should stay away ....next thing you know we are arguing ....why don't we skip it this time )

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/22/2013 11:53:31 PM)

Mike, it may very well be your honest opinion, but LP brings up a good point and wants to discuss that point. Your honest opinion is 1) Rude 2) Hijacking 3) Trying to squelch discussion other than what you see as valid. Best form here would be apologize and move on with the topic or not participate.

To the OP, I believe some of it may be wanting to do things in a "large" way but I don't think it is for fame always. Not sure what to call it, but it seems like a version of making a post that the entire world will see (if that makes sense).

LadyPact -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/23/2013 2:47:06 AM)

Orion, you are close to where I am coming from.

I can't remember where I was studying years ago about a certain angle of motivation about suicide. While not all people who take their own lives have it as a part of their reasoning, some do have the process of making a statement to those left behind. Kind of a "look at what you have done" thought process. The "I'm going to make you feel sorry that I went to these lengths" deal.

The grander the incident, the bigger the effect. If someone feels insignificant in their suffering, are they reaching for significance to society?

Level -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/23/2013 3:36:12 AM)

I think some of them use that to relieve themselves of blame, as well; "if you hadn't of done _________ to me, I wouldn't have to do this".

Nosathro -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/23/2013 3:38:19 AM)

There is some evidence that attempting fame would be true. John Hinkley for one comes to mind, as well as Sirhan Sirhan. I am not sure if reasons for John Holmes has been understood. I have no doubt in my view that for all of those person acted on personal reasons for the attacks.

LP I think you are referring to what some call, "Suicide by Police", there is a believe that some creat the such incidents in hopes that the police will kill them. I am not aware of these shooters leaving behind any messages, but you do have a good idea.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Grasping for fame (1/23/2013 4:08:54 AM)

I find it interesting that the over the top murder suicides are almost exclusively done by men. I know that men aren't the only mentally damaged people in the world...................
