News reports indicate Leon Panetta, US Secretary of Defence, is lifting the ban on women in most combat roles in the US military.

Will this cause the end of western civilization or usher in a new golden age?

jlf1961 -> RE: Women in combat (1/23/2013 2:07:40 PM)

This is a good idea IF we take women out of the combat zones if they are PMSing.

The reason is that it will keep the US from being charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Otherwise I am all for it.

Fancy that! I never knew that Mr Cunningham had gone into politics after they stopped making Happy Days.

Neither. I think that this is a poorly thought out idea. Sure, it looks good on paper, but so do three-somes and communism.

Why precisely, if we are going to put troops into combat, should one gender be excluded from those roles and the danger associated with it?

In today's world, they shouldn't. Doesn't mean it's a good thing, just appropriate.

Moonlightmaddnes -> RE: Women in combat (1/23/2013 3:14:01 PM)

Well finally. I would not want to go into combat but I am sure there are women who do.

Don't kid yourself. A few good women during PMS could save us years of warfare.

(It's a joke, people.)

It's insane.

Just like three-somes and communism.

Exactly how many Chinese women would they be facing on the battlefield?

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Women in combat (1/23/2013 3:49:33 PM)

FR...

I can only imagine the howls and vitriol that would come down if a male senior infantry officer offered a "joke" about women on the battlefield being more effective if they were PMS'ing.

Can the push a button on an Attack Sub? Maybe.

Do they have the strength and reflexes to fly combat fighter planes at high Gs? I guess there could be one or two.

Would they be able to fight equally and as effective against men in hand to hand combat, in fire fights, attack raids and the like? NO... they can not!

What a bunch of PC and symbolic crap this is!

servantforuse -> RE: Women in combat (1/23/2013 4:02:41 PM)

Is anyone prepared for the day when a woman is taken prisoner by an enemy force ? I say this policy is PC and not a good for all involved.

Actually women in general perform just as well under high g loads as men do.

Nothing prevents a woman from performing as well as a man in these scenarios. In hand to hand combat in particular speed is a bigger factor than physical strength and women are faster than men, in general. The major advantage a man has is physical strength which only really matters if humping a field pack.

Do the Israelis allow women to be in any and all combat roles?

Around 61 CE a Celtic Queen named Boudicca with army of some 100,000 strong rebeled against the Romans in Britian. Although in the end she was defeated but never captured if forced the Roman Governor to be more conciliatory to the Celtics.

Why don't they compete against men in boxing, karate or cage fighting ?
It's not like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer".

I do recall a woman taking on a Karate Expert who was male, she used boxing techniques and won. Personally...I have fought many women in sword fighting, I been defeated by some, all were great with different sword techiques, all inspired me to work harder at my sport.

Off the top of my head I recall they tried it bit it didn't work out so well and they don't do it now. I think it had something to do with the men getting too emotional when the women got all shot up and trying to assist them to the point that things fell apart on the battlefield and diminished the effectiveness of the men.

tazzygirl -> RE: Women in combat (1/23/2013 4:46:54 PM)

Caracal is a mixed gender battalion, it has been 70% female since 2009.

Israel
In 1999 the Caracal Battalion was formed and included women; now it is 70% female. Further combat positions have opened to women, including Artillery, Field Intelligence, Search and Rescue, NBC, Border Patrol, K-9 Unit and anti-aircraft warfare.

Because those are stylized combat with rules that favor extended bouts where strength and physical resilience matter.

In the real world hand to hand combat involving at least one trained combatant the encounter ends with one person dead within a few seconds.
