At 7 months? They would have to have had a damn compelling reason to terminate at 7 months. There is only one reason for a late term abortion.
Majority of abortions occur before 24 weeks. There is no hypocrisy here.

I don't think Cordelia was accusing anyone of hypocrisy except the hospital. That is, would the mother have been allowed to terminate the pregnancy if she chose to at 7 months, or if that's too late (which is quite clear). So, the fetuses most likely should have been birthed in an effort to save their lives. I think that's what Cordelia meant.

FR

Oddly, I don't find this inconsistent. The Catholic Church (like many other religions) historically did not have any funeral or last rites for a miscarriage. In other words, from a religious perspective they have actually never treated the fetus as a person.

The fact that the Church chooses to treat the fetus as a person to fight the abortion battle is actually a relatively recent thing within the history of the Church.

The hypocrisy of the two current positions is laughable, but only because the Church refuses to honor its own historical moral code - the one that functioned as if the fetus was NOT a person/soul. If a miscarried fetus doesn't require last rites or a funeral or proper burial, then really, this seems entirely consistent with the moral idea that the fetus is NOT a person/soul.

What the abortion debate (a relatively recent one in the history of the Church) has done is completely turned the original moral approach of the Church on its head. But only because they refuse to see that historically the Church already had an answer to the question of whether the fetus was a person/soul.

Everything would function much better if the Church would just stick with its historical perspective on the fetus. It is the attempt to change the perspective that is actually landing the Church (and other religions, too) into hypocrisy. [sm=2cents.gif]

I can think of a couple of reasons to terminate at 7 months. Of course, Tazzy, you know my history and why I would know about those reasons.

What I cannot figure out is why they did not pull those babies when the mother was dying. I get that they could not get in contact with the OBGYN on call, but why did they not contact a different one or another hospital? Any pregnant woman knows that they may die during delivery. . . what is that show on TLC or something, "When Babies Attack"? But really? No one was around to pull those babies?

If I recall correctly, Colorado does do late term abortions. They are, however, quite expensive. 5 years or so ago, it was something like 50,000 dollars.

I half wonder if it was a paperwork issue.
