Once you get all the gear you'll be taking with you on the sectional hike together go to a moderate stretch of hiking trail with your broken in footgear and do a weekend hike. A single three day, two night stretch will give you some idea of what you're missing (if anything) and what you need to tweak to be comfortable out there for a much longer stretch of time. In your first aid packet make sure you pack some moleskin. It works wonders for protecting sore spots until they can build up enough callouses to protect themselves. Ziploc bags, strong black trash bags, and a poncho (someone already mentioned it) are your friends.

Yes, how could I forget Ziploc bags (a few different sizes). You can use them for leftovers/snacks or isolate stuff that gets wet. And this is going to sound odd, but a few rubber bands (big ones) are great for securing things closed/rolled and they take up no space/weight. Keep them wrapped around your water bottle (good for extra grip) while you're not using them.

I've hiked stretches in CT (only 53 miles are in CT) and also into the Berkshires in MA.
Lightweight layers (fleece dries out quickly) are your friend - EVEN if you're hiking in the summer it can get quite cold at night. A fleece pullover can be rolled and double as a pillow at night.
It might seem silly to add a light pair of fleece gloves, but it isn't. You can store stuff in them (1/2 rolls of toilet paper) for space.
A good floppy hat.
A large strong, but lightweight nylon poncho is great to keep both you and your pack dry (walking soaking wet is a drag) and it can double for use to cover your stuff at night (you don't need to cram everything into your tent if it's tight).
A sturdy Swiss Army-type knife or Leatherman-type multi-tool.
Lightweight headlamp instead of a bulky flashlight. Keeps your hands free and keeps the weight down.

That is a REALLY important point.

You can't open Crown Royal efficiently without a good tool such as that.

Been there but never hiked it. Mama's family is from Appalachia, Kentucky and West Virginia. Beautiful, BEAUTIFUL place. Very poor, though. Pikeville sure has grown over the years, though.

If you have a Publc Broadcasting System tv channel in your area I know you will find a show on the trail . I watched it twice so far thinking about doing it . The only thing stopping me is I may like it to much and not come back .
