I want to try growing bell peppers, and sun flower seeds and other nuts and stuff

Status: offline 		we used to grow sunflowers as kids.

My dad has an almond tree, a pear tree a lemon tree an apple tree and an orange tree.

But what other nuts and stuff that are ok for a diabetic that can grow in a planter pot are there.


And what other fruits and veggies that are ok for a diabetic to grow can you grow in Sacramento.

Status: offline 		I dont know about what is ok for diabetic and what not but what I did plant on my balcony, beside peppers, were beans and peas and courgette and all sorts of herbs, pumpkin (ok, they did not work out but I did plant them...same applies to watermelon) and tomatoes and egg plants....

Status: offline 		Phoneix, diabetics are not supposed to have a lot of water mellon because it's very high sugar, though my dad grows wm's and I'll eat some of his, and we're supposed to eat tons of grapes, nor tons of banna's nor tons of pineapple.

Status: offline 		Try checking for some of those upside down hanging kits. They are making them in more than just tomatoes now. You usually can just hang them up on the balcony or in the house. I've heard they are super easy to maintain and very fruitful.

I usually grow herbs to season tomato dishes, chicken (and other meats), and salsa. Then I freeze them in ice cubes when I have too many for soups and stews. A few herbs can add a lot of flavor and hardly any calories (if any at all).

My experience is that sunflower seeds typically should not be grown in the house. They can get to be very tall.

Status: offline 		yes, those we'd grow outside. But when I say pots, it'd be pots outside, because my dad started and is keeping a lot of his tree's in pots till they're very hardy and set up, since we get hard frosts that have killed some of his tree's that were out hardy enough.

That and I can not really just start taking over his yard an growing anything I wish lol. Though he would set aside a lil plot for me and we're working on that.

Status: offline 		Never the less, everything BUT sunflower's can easily be grown in small pots in the yard or house. In fact, they make kits for all of those items I listed.

Status: offline 		Almost all vegetables will grow in pots and are fine for diabetics (exceptions are potatoes and yams).

Fruit trees and nut trees are hard to grow in pots. There are a few miniature types of fruit trees specifically for containers. I'd go with potted strawberries instead.

I've heard that the upside-down growers are crap quality.

I have a friend who tried the upside down kit. They get too heavy, so unless they are hung with a very strong hook, stuck into a main beam or something, they are likely to fall.

As for the quality, while the kit will come with seeds, anything can be grown in the container. In fact, it probably wouldn't be that difficult to make your own.

No matter what kind of tomato you grow though, it won't come close to a Jersey tomato. Those are simply the best, lol.

Status: offline 		Not sure how hot it is in Sacramento, but I've grown spinach (spinach likes cool weather, so this might be a winter/early spring one if it's real hot there), basil, chives, lettuce, and parsley in a planter, and mint, cucumber, beans, and onions in a pot. Keep in mind if you grow things in pots you have water them more often, at least every few days.

I love beefsteak tomatoes mmmmm. With a little bit of salt n pepper or mozzarella and balsamic vinegar.

Status: offline 		I agree with DS on the upside down planters. Ours fell apart when we try to use them.

Use egg cartoons to get your seedlings started. Sunflowers have to be grown in full sunlight. This year, I am buying a few planters and growing a few herbs on the front porch. Mom does not know this...she killed the rosemary a couple of years ago (could of been the drought though...).

Status: offline 		For mini sunflowers with fullsized noggins, check out a variety called Sunspot. They are adorable and only grow about 2 feet tall ^_^

Sunflowers do best outside, though, just because they grow a long taproot that likes to be established pretty early in their development.

Status: offline 		Google community gardens for your area here a 10x10 plot is $25-40 which includes tools, manure & compost, top dressing, seeds & seedlings. The local food stamp office has a plan that gives plots free to those on assistance beause it decreases grocery bills.

Tomatos, peppers, pickle cucumbers,peas & beans can all be done in 5 gallon buckets.

Metal hanging baskets usually designed for "ball arrangements" work the best for growing upside down. Any of the topsy products should ONLY be used with cherry or grape tomato dwarf varieties like cherry 100 & bush baby grape varieties

Sunflowers are pretty easy for me to grow and I do so every year. They are not a tree, but a flowering plant that must be replanted each year. They require full sun (e.g. completely out of shade) and would need daily watering in your area.

Almonds are a nut tree and far different from fruit trees. I know nothing about growing nut trees.

I have had great success with a wide variety of fruit trees but they require a fair amount of care and work in my area. In addition, it's about 3 years or so before they really start to produce in any area.

I know that your area has tremendous success with fruit trees, but I don't know how to coach you on them and I strongly suspect that it's an endeavor that will take a few years to get established.

I am a SEVERE Juvenile Diabetic myself. All of the stuff you have listed is perfectly healthy for any diabetic. Even watermelon is good for a diabetic when eaten in reasonable quantities.

As for planters and pots, not much of what you listed will grow well except sunflowers and even that is going to be a challenge. Nuts and fruits come from mature trees. There's a number of vegetables and herbs that do well as potted plants, but few (if any) fruits and nuts.

As was mentioned above, tomatoes are a great choice for any beginner and especially a potted plant beginner. Onions, carrots, and peppers are also great choices for potted vegetables.

Check out urbangardener they have a website and they specialise in that kind of thing... You would be surprised what you can grow in a pot. Oh go to the USDA and figure out what zone you are in first.


Check out a square foot gardening(mel barthalomew) books from the library too. You can grow 90% of what a row gardener does in very little space with a little imagination.
