My son says that menare hiiting on me all the time. I thinkhe is nuts.
My son says any time a guy approaches a woman he doesn't know in public, he is hitting on her.

So, the guy who offers to shovel snow for me?
The guy at the grocery store who noticed what i had in my cart and handed me coupons related to it, hitting on me?
The guy who strikes up a conversation in the isle at blockbuster?

I think people are just nice and friendly, not looking to hook up.

Am i missing out on opportunities to flirt?

I really dont pay these things any attention.

He's wrong that they're necessarily hitting on you. However, it DOES provide an opening, should you want to use it.

If someone strikes up a conversation and you like him, simply keep the conversation going until he asks for your number.

I am not invested either way. My son and I (he is 24) have differing views on this. I have never once thought a guy was hitting on me, just never even crossed my mind. HE IS OFTEN SAYING! "THAT GUY WAS SOOO HITTING ON YOU?" My response is usually, "what guy?"

OP,when I strike up a conversation,sometimes I'm hitting on a woman other times just being nice...so your poll doesn't have an option for that so I did not vote.I can not speak for the other guys...but I can say most women can tell when I'm trying to do more than just pass the time.

If someone approaches me, I think they are being friendly or needing to ask something. I do not automatically assume every man who chats with me wants to get with me.

It has always been really obvious when someone hits on me.

I never recognize it either. But, on the rare occasion I have been inveigled into conversation, the hitting on becomes obvious about 20 minutes later.

I think he's right. Unless it's a boy scout helping you across the street, then they're trying to earn a merit badge or some such.
