My baby ?

A Midnight Metallic Blue 1986 Thunderbird.....nearly mint on the outside... mint on the inside...

under the hood though... was the guts from a '96 Mustang GT.... 5.0 with a slightly modified cam... 3spd AOD with a shift kit... posi rear end... dual flowmasters... aluminum American racing rims with 65's front and back....

You wanna talk about gittin up and goin somewhere.....

unfortunately... thanks to a killjoy Sergeant in the Rantoul P.D. it cost Me some big fines.... and I had to sell the car to My buddy, since I became "known" in it....

I miss that car.

(p.s. The only reason I got caught by the police and the nova didn't was because the nova was about two blocks behind Me by the time the sergeant clocked Me.... heh)

I raced quite a few people with My Cadillac and humiliated them.  The young punk who thought he was all that and a bag of chips with his Honda Prelude got his ass royally handed to him.  That was probably my favorite one.  A great big tank with what I suppose is a high performance engine absolutely trashing a Honda.

My second favorite was the time I raced a Mustang with my 2001 Nissan Sentra with a 5 speed.  Mr. Big Boy with his sports car could not even take Me.  In fact, I took him on take off.  We were both doing 195 Km/h down the highway before the limiters kicked in and we had to slow down for other traffic.  Quite fun.  We waved at each other as I pulled into the slow lane so he could take off down the road.

Kedikat -> RE: Off Topic discussion ? Here we go, I feel young (6/20/2006 1:38:20 PM)

Not racing at all.

Just stepping on the gas.
Find a sportcar club parking lot rally and try some racing. You can enter any kind of car in some of them. They catergorize in simple ways and clock you on a course.

It is an eye opening experience for freeway "racers". And legal safe fun too.

To no one in particular:

Automobiles, the epitome of the penis-extender.  One day they'll make one that actually works.

Have fun in and with your cars, but please,  get over the idea that one is somehow more masculine than the other, and that any of them matter more than any other thing or tool does.

Moloch -> RE: Off Topic discussion ? Here we go, I feel young (6/20/2006 1:56:17 PM)

I view cars as family members not penis extensions.

OedipusRexIt -> RE: Off Topic discussion ? Here we go, I feel young (6/20/2006 2:28:27 PM)

Degustubus non disputandum....

Enjoy them, I say.

Heck, adopt them, pamper them and give them the best room in the dungeon.   Just remember that you better not think you have the right to try and run my ass down because a car makes you feel powerful.

I remember the days of fast cars and motorycles.  We had supercharged hemi and wedge-head V-8s that we ran on the street as "sleepers."  But it really got expensive to build and maintain a race car.  I eventally graduated to motorcycles, only because you can get more bang for the buck.  I sold my last big block Corvette in 1985, and I now drive an SUV and a Jeep.  But I still own very powerful motorcycles, and when I really want to get it on with speed, I just hop on a two-wheeler.  Whoo-hoo, I am not dead yet!

OK, now who wants to shift into second gear?

Maybe because it will hydroplane and spin out of control faster than you can blink your eyes? [8D]

Between 59 and 06 I can not stand Corvettes.  Most of them were absolutely butt ugly and none of them were even remotely practical on anything but dry pavement.

Nah... it doesn't really hydroplane, but when the oil rises up on the surface, it doesn't take much for the rear-end to slide out from underneath. Lots of people don't like Vettes and that's why I've also got a 69' Chevelle SS with a 396 and Turbo 400 automatic -- Now you really wanna talk about a fun car to drive in the rain -- That's it! -- just make sure there are no other cars on the road!  Can you say ''sideways''!!   ; }

Termyn8or -> RE: Off Topic discussion ? Here we go, I feel young (6/20/2006 4:57:32 PM)

First of all there was practically no traffic.

Second of all, GMs were the most advanced cars made by US manufacturers though the late 80s and early 90s. Ever seen a roller cam in a Ford of the era ? NOT in a sportscar or musclecar, I mean off the showroom floor.

My buddy's 95 Dodge truck still has a carb and a distributor. My beater that is eight years older has distrubutorless ignition, multiport high pressure fuel injection and a roller cam. The redball 3.8L won the Grand National in 86, it's first year of production. It has an engine control system every bit as good as today's new cars. The spark plugs and the oil are still clean after 10,000 miles. On an emission check, it is almost an air cleaner. Of course this one only has 97,000 miles on it, very low for an 87.

But then all four engine mounts ar broken, what do you think broke them ?

Now that people have decided to reminisce about their past cars, my favorite was a 1970 Olds Toronado with the W34 package. Non transverse front wheel drive, offset rim 0 caster, 0 camber and 0 toe in, linear torsion bar suspension which made a sway bar unnecessary. Over 400 hp and had the traction to use it. If you spin the wheels for only a half a second the smoke fills the street, and you won't spin again, but be prepared to get put back in the seat when you hit the gas.

I beat every smallblock I tried, and even a few motorcycles.

One smallblock may have given me trouble, it belonged to my cousin. a 64 Olds 442 with three two barrels, so I guess it was a 642. Ripped the front bolts out of the seat taking off one day. I guess there was some rust down there but come on, I never heard of such a thing. With the gears  he had in the thing, even with the three dueces it would only do 110 MPH, but you could take off in third gear.

And I agree about shifting your own gears. Nobody in our family is allowed not to be able to drive a stick. For example I have a buddy who can't drive a stick, my Mother has this cat that is quite shy. We were doing some work on her house and the cat came to him. I told him that now he must learn how to drive a stick. If the cat chooses you you are chosen family. Just so happens we just bought a pickup truck with a 5-speed. His day is coming.

I was always a big block fan. Fifteen years ago I was spending $70 a week on gasoline. Nothing today, but what did gas cost them ? I guess now I have admitted to being a polluter, terrorism supporter and who knows what else for my excesses.

But I like Buicks and Oldsmobiles, I am not that fond of Caddilacs. Chevys and Pontiacs are OK, I can take them or leave them. All the rest are all the rest, anything that serves me and gets me from point A to point B is good. It is also a big plus if it can get me back from point B to point A.

I guess the era is over. Nowadays it is so hard to find the opportunity where there is no traffic and you can lay down on the gas. I do not drive aggresively in traffic. Actually I wish there was a local racetrack you could rent for a night or something. Of course leave a deposit in case they have to scrape your head up from the track later.

Actually I don't have anything to run right now, but my Buick uses a MAF sensor not a MAP so supercharging it is a piece of cake. Problem then is converting to hydroboost brakes.

Anyway, when I look at a car now to buy I look at servicability more than anything. Sad ain't it ?

A friend of Mine had a Chevelle that was done up for the quarter mile.  That car was absolutely insane.  It would easily lift the front end up right off the ground.  But, with the twelve point roll cage in it you were not too worried about it.  It would pass anything and everything but a gas station.  In reality the car made absolutely no practical sense, but geez was it ever fun to go for a rip in it.

Actually, I couldn't disagree more. The older muscle cars are masterpieces of American art &  ingenuity from a truly bygone era. Not to mention, some of them have appreciated in value, fifteen and twenty-fold, since the early/mid eighties.

I hear ya.... mine is just factory-stock, with zero modifications - But trust me... it's got some real ''scoot'' behind it. And as you've mentioned....a very fun car to drive.[;)]

Not the prettiest of cars, but I agree.... the W34 package was nice. Knew a guy with a 70 Cutlass, with the same package.

My former brother in law used to have a 69 Triumph hardtop.  A very rare car indeed.  With three carbs on an inline six and a manual transmission the car was wickedly fast.  It was almost as much fun as the Chevelle.

Yes....a British masterpiece. I've always liked those older Triumphs.
