Just got offered a job making $18.00 an hour, but here's the catch. They will only guarantee a one year contract. He then gives me the sell of Well many people go to full time with this company. I asked him "Well how many is Many??"

He couldn't answer that question

Right Now I have a full time job, its an internal customer service desk. I don't have to sell anything, I just have to tell the person on the other end of the phone how wonderful and marvelous they are and what a great job they are doing for the company.

I despise it because simply put, I am not that kind of person to be a cheerleader, and it is not a technical job. But it pays the bills.

I told the guy, Better that I am in a job that I hate, with a guarantee of some sort than to be in a job I love, not knowing if I am going to be there tomorrow.

Now before you say, But you have no guarantee, indeed But there are people who I have worked with who have been with the company 20,30 and 35 years. I would say I have a better than average chance of staying there till I retire.

Better the Devil I know than the Devil I don't

Security is nice, but you say you hate the job... how are you going to feel about it a few years down the road?

I left what I thought was a permanent job, for a temporary one, with better pay. The temp job turned permanent, and the first company ended up going under.

IMHO, and in my experience, this is a terrible time to walk away from a secure job unless the new one has strong indicia of at least equal security. Hang out in the secure job for a year or two, see how things look then.

I think that I would take the new job. I would then work my butt off learning everything I could about the new company. You might be that valuable employee that he will keep while others are let go.

Yes, you could be very stable in your current job, or that could disappear (through no fault of your own, I might add) in a week, a month, or any time. The company might fold, or it might decide to eliminate your department. Without intending any offense at all, it does sound like a part of the company that isn't making the company any money, but costing it a substantial amount...it would probably be pretty high on the chopping block if something had to go.

But there aren't any guarantees with the new job offer, either, of course, like you said. I wouldn't dream of advising you on which one is right for you and which one isn't. But some things to consider are relative job securities, the relative pay, the opportunity to do something you actually enjoy, and how much personal risk there is to you in switching jobs (if you lost your job, how long would you be out of work before the bills became unpayable, etc.).

My two cents...if we always waited for a guarantee that something was going to work out, we would never do anything. Sometimes, after evaluating the risks and rewards, we have to take a leap of faith.

I would stay where you are for now. The sheer fact that the interviewer refused to share stats of how many temps become full timers shows you that they aren't hiring full timers.

Stay where you are and be secure and keep looking for something that fits your needs better. Maybe it will be six months, or eighteen months. But as long as you do the job to the best of your abilities, you know that you won't be canned in a year.

I always stayed, but never stopped looking,, and left when I found something I wanted to do. Of course, now I'm self-employed and impoverished, LOL...
Companies don't have to keep anybody, and it's always good to know your options.
This is definitely a go with your gut deal.

Speaking from experience, if it's an actual contractor/temp agency they don't often know what they are talking about. They only get half the story or try to place you so that they make more money.

If it's coming straight from the company someone should be able to answer the question. A lot of companies will start with temps and if they can hack it, then and only then do they hire you on. You will not believe how many lazy temps there are. You have to take the risk of being there 6 months to a year.

I've had more than a few temp jobs offered to go permanent. Temping, while not lucrative, was always a favorite of mine. I could try new areas in my field and new companies. I was able to gain some experience and see if I liked certain aspects. There are no certainties in this economy, I vote for do something you love.

I would diplomatically insist on an answer just to make sure the number was over 20% or so. I have confidence that I would make the cut if they do in fact hire to full time and are not just BSing.

Nevermind. Didn't realize there was a choice.

Keep the one you are at and continue looking for a better one you will enjoy while still employed.
