I'd like to remind folks to keep in mind that dogs are omnivores, leaning mostly towards mainly needing a meat diet, preferably raw, if they can handle t. Heavy grain consumption is for cattle, who have 4 stomachs for dealing with that. Corn, is a very "HOT" food, and will cause much metabolic imbalance unless used sparingly. I believe corn also has a high glycemic index which makes for way too much sugar. I also believe a high sugar diet is to cancer and diabetes as gasoline is to a wildfire. Foods that are mostly grain, rice, etc., especially those that are dry, usually require the animal to ingest way more water to process it than under normal eating circumstances. Can be stressful to the kidneys. Too high a grain and corn diet can cause metabolic, gut and allergy problems. These issues are virtually becoming endemic in the veterinary field. Dogs and cats eating a more raw meat diet receive much in terms of enzymes and water from it, and won't require drinking as much water as when on a dry, hi-grain diet. We can thank the pet food lobbyists that began to get a foothold in the 60's and 70's, brainwashing folks into believing our animals would be better off eating what they make the most money off of. Remember, most of them are not interested in our animal's health, or helping us pay our vet bills. They're looking to make the most money possible, damn the consequences. As far to many of us learn, cheaper up front often costs us more down the line, especially in the form of a broken heart and empty wallet, when our pet suffer and die as a result.
