BTW, if anyone happens to find themselves in Baltimore and wants to see the Francis Scott Key Museum, it's amazing--get in touch with me and I'll take you on a tour of Fort McHenry.

I took a group from a summer program I was teaching a few years ago there!
They had a blast.
Heck, so did I.

Who decides what is the "proper" way to sing it?

You do. From now on. Happy now?

I've ALWAYS decided what was proper for me and mine.
I don't presume to able to tell everyone else on the planet what is proper for them.

Little story about that. I was in Bmore many years ago with someone and we stayed in the inner harbor.
We got one of the tourist maps to see where Ft McHenry was. It looked close on a map with no scale so we said "Awwwwwwwww, it's a pretty day, we'll just walk".[&:]

LMAO--yeah, we're a little teensy town, but it's uphill both ways. I feel for ya!
It's only a short walk if you can walk across water, But now we have water taxis.

littlewonder -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 12:06:53 PM)

and the free charm city circulator which will take you straight there from the harbor now.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 12:09:21 PM)

All wasn't lost though. I found a really nice little hole in the wall bar/crab shack on the walk back.
I hate to eat at chains and touristy places.

You realize that now several of us are going to have to do a recon to see which one it was. Unless you remember the name.
You don't tell Baltimoreans about a crab shack without giving us the chance to fight about which one is best.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 12:33:41 PM)

I pulled up a map. I don't remember the name but it was on Fort Ave. 2-story building on a corner on the left as you are headed toward the fort.

ETA. I went back to Google Maps, did a bunch of street views and Im pretty sure it was LP Steamers.

Notsweet -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 2:53:02 PM)

Thanks--it's on the list now!
I will search for the best crabcake at the most reasonable price--and I will keep it all for myself! BWAHAHAHAHAHA

Crab junkie! Lol

LP Steamers are ok but the best crab cakes in Baltimore is G&M Restaurant. OMG, those things are amazing. Huge, very little filler and on fresh, homemade kaiser rolls. I love that place!

Powergamz1 -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 4:55:54 PM)

It was originally a drinking song, the poem was added as lyrics to create the anthem.

2 big myths about the Star Spangled Banner are that it is extraordinarily difficult in range to sing, and that there is a 'right' version.

It makes me laugh when people say, the artists should sing the song as it was written.
Okay, if that is the case.
Don't sing it read it.

After all if I remember correctly it was a poem not a song.

Notsweet -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 7:27:00 PM)

Everybody says that, but have you had the ones at Koko's on Harford Road?

Also, there's a place not far from Lil Squaw, but I can't remember the name. grrrrrrr.

I knew it couldn't be a difficult range, because I can sing it and hit the notes. But then...high school choir, so maybe it's just something you have to practice.

To sing it well does require a pretty stout range and some have suggested we need a new national anthem.

Powergamz1 -> RE: Alicia Keys National Anthem Rendition (2/6/2013 8:28:37 PM)

The unembellished melody range is one step more than Silent Night (which is an octave and a half).

C to C1, then D, E, F, G (Do to Do1, then re, mi, fa, sol).

I didn't have crab cakes. I had freshly boiled crabs.

ETA...and beer.

No, never heard of KoKo's. I'll have to check it out and report back.
