I saw it last night, and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoy Jazz Music or "Jazzy renditions" of many songs, and I feel she did quite fine. I logged into my yahoo account and saw this story, and thought I would share it/ask some questions. What say you all?

http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/stop-the-presses/singing-star-spangled-banner-sure-recipe-backlash-ask-103647816.html (The video of her singing it is roughly 1/4 the way down on the article)

I truly enjoyed it.

Granted those that sing the anthem seem to get heat.
I don't care who you are or how well you do.
Hell I remember Whitney getting crap when she did it.

Sad really.

I thought she was phenomenal and was one of the best renditions I have heard. If I get goosebumps then they hit it right in my eyes.

I do have to add that it does disappoint me a little when an artist spins off into their own version, only for the fact that you can't really sing along in your head - you never know when they decide to end a note, but doesn't make the performance less worthy.

Yes, artists do seem catch flak for performing the anthem, as if no one should bother as "something" will be "wrong" with it.

Yes, theshytype, sometimes you will be singing along...with no one. The artist has moved on. Or you are done singing a bit and the artist isn't. But you know what? Annoying as it might be at times, I still love it. It's still the freedom to be creative.

It makes me laugh when people say, the artists should sing the song as it was written.
Okay, if that is the case.
Don't sing it read it.

After all if I remember correctly it was a poem not a song.

Bingo! It's about the Battle of Fort McHenry. Francis Scott Key is recounting what he witnessed, including the (then) semi-new Congreve Rocket (the rockets red glare). It's actually a wonderful poem.

I agree with you, I like the originality.

I wouldn't say it annoys me.
It's just like the moments in the car when singing along and during my (sarcastic comment to follow) oh-so-fantastic award-winning performance I fudge a portion of it and pulls me back into reality.

I think the changes actually force people to listen to the artist and appreciate it (or rip it to shreds as some do).

I didn't like it. A country's national anthem should inspire pride in the country. She sang most of the song like a love song. And no, I don't mean like she was "in love" with her country. However, other than that she really didn't butcher the song too badly until she got to the last "regular" line, then she went off on all of her little trills and runs. The anthem should be about the country, not a showcase for a singers "talent", if that is what you want to call it. Then the last line that she added to it was just totally fucked, no ifs, ands or buts.

That said, though, I do think she has a great voice, but the anthem is about the song and about the country...NOT about her or her want, need, or desire to embellish it.

THIS was the beginning of the interpretations of the Stars Spangle Banner...Big uproar back then as well but from that day on there have been many. If sung with respect how it sounds is really not that important.

My vote was that I really enjoyed it. I didn't think she strayed too far from the original score. In addition, I thought she was classy and elegant.

Lovely gown, btw.

I'm in the minority here about not liking it. I like Alicia Keys, I liked that she played piano with it. I didn't like that she slowed it to a crawl with all the long pauses between lines.

I hated Xtina's version. Keys' I just didn't care for. I though Whitney Houston's was moving (whether she lip synced or not).

Thank you all who replied so far. Nothing wrong if some on here didn't like, "to each their own" as the saying goes. I too did not care for Christina Aguilera's version. One of the best I've heard was Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam at an old Seattle Supersonics game. Can't find the vid on youtube, though, saw it months ago and loved it.

I think the national anthem should be sung properly with respect. To most performers it's an "all about me" moment. Ms. Keys included.

Best. National. Anthem. Ever.

I didn't like it. It just sounded strange to me and personally she sounded a bit off key to me. It didn't make me tear up like other versions that I have heard in the past. I was just bored by it.

Then again I didn't like Beyonce either and thought all she did was the same stuff she does on her tour. Yeah, ok, she brought her old mates back but she's done that on tours too and other stuff. I just don't find what's so fascinating about her.

Who decides what is the "proper" way to sing it?

Definitely agree! I was thinking the other day, when I heard Alicia Keyes, I wonder how many people know what the words actually are saying. It's an amazing poem, and there are only what, two sentences it in? I remember several verses, because I was in school choir.

I'm not crazy about how everyone sings it, but as long as it's done with the appropriate respect (think Whitney Houston versus Roseanne Barr), I've come to enjoy some people's styles of singing it. Alicia Keyes just did a beautiful job, I thought. I also love Jimi Hendrix's instrumental version.

BTW, if anyone happens to find themselves in Baltimore and wants to see the Francis Scott Key Museum, it's amazing--get in touch with me and I'll take you on a tour of Fort McHenry.
