What are people's thoughts on the upcoming
Google glasses, and the hinted at Apple glasses?

Smart glasses are coming and even at a glance,
it's clear that these type of devices will signify a
leap ahead in personal connectivity and access to
information.

I probably wouldn't buy neardy cyborg looking
glasses in the video, but if they made them look
like normal glasses, I have to say, I'd be very
tempted.

... As long as they don't give you brain cancer. [8D]

I'm a doubter.....and I doubt that the production models of this product will work as well as the prototypes. In addition, it looks terribly fragile limited usage and what kind of power source does it have? What is the run time? The concept is actually more than 15 years old too.

I foresee a lot of car accidents until the law kicks in to ban them during driving.

The tech has a LONG, LONG way to go before it will work as advertised without driving away women.

It does raise an important question...
In a culture where everyone wears glasses, how
will we be able to tell who is legitimately smart,
from those who just look the part?

The streets will be filled with fake smart looking
people!

And not to mention ResidentSadist, with glasses
being everwhere, peering over them will become
common place, no longer a gesture of
imperious nonchalance but mearly an attempt to
see another person past the popups.

I agree with Jeff that the tech has got a long way
to go before we have a headset that doesn't make
it obvious you have a computer on your head, but
I can see "lite" forms of this type of media delivery
being practical and fashionable in the near future,
like an ebook reader pair of glasses that look just
like a normal pair.

Kindle glasses!
I read laying down in bed and I have trouble
finding ways to do it comfortably, so that idea is
pretty appealing to me.

Broadening your problem statement for a moment... the human interface is the weak link in the computing chain right now. We can shrink transistors down to the atomic level (and perhaps beyond) and make CPU's smaller and smaller. But we still use 24" monitors, 10" ipads, 22" keyboards, etc. As I look at my computer I'm typing at right now it's using a full desk worth of space yet the computer itself (a full tower case no less) only consumes a fraction of that.

So the problem of human interface is a pressing one. We WILL solve direct linkage and in the not too distant future. This sort of thing is simply steps along the path. In the end do I want more bandwidth between me and the computer? Yes. Will these provide it? No.

ARIES83 -> RE: Google glasses (2/5/2013 2:56:42 PM)

Jeff,
As soon as the interface becomes virtual it takes
up no space, the maturation of these type of
devices could mean that with stereoscopic
enhanced reality overlaid on what a person sees,
it's posible to see a keyboard without it being there
and with cameras on the actual device registering
what your hands are doing, it would be possible to
interact with these virtual interfaces because the
device could determine what you were doing in
relation to what it is displaying.

Granted it wont be for a while but it's very
achievable.
