I am usually pretty objective about other peoples' opinions....but the idea that someone teaches their children what they believe about the Bible is child abuse is just about the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. And kudos for making it even more ridiculous by lumping it in with all that sex causes cancer crap. I don't know anyone who believes in creationism who tells their kids all that other stuff. Give me a break.

My kids and I have had quite a few discussions about this. I have shared with them what I believe, what I don't quite understand, and what others information is out there. I don;t know what theory or belief they will end up embracing, but they are most certainly NOT abused.

Good grief.

I think that depends an awful lot on what they believe about the Bible. Looking at some of the beliefs out there it doesn't seem like such a ridiculous idea.

While our court system put an end to the complete sexual repression performed by the shakers there are still very damaging sexually repressive teachings floating around out there in other denominations. Take this example:

quote:

ORIGINAL: http://abcnews.go.com/US/gay-teen-filmmaker-eric-james-borges-commits-suicide/story?id=15355142
He also described a traumatic coming out experience in an "extremist Christian household." His parents did not accept his sexuality and he said he was kicked out of his home around the end of September.

"My mother knew I was gay and performed an exorcism on me in an attempt to cure me," Borges said. "My anxiety, depression, self-loathing and suicidal thoughts spiked. I had nowhere safe to go, either at home or school."

Teaching a kid that they are evil and wrong because the Bible says so seems to constitute child abuse to me.

I don't know anyone who believes in creationism who tells their kids all that other stuff.

What or who you don't know, isn't the point.

The point is that teaching proven falsehoods as fact opens the door for influencing children with the whole range of unproven views, including the extreme and harmful ones and that crosses over into the range of abuse.
