I imagine this would be a problem for people who do not have direct deposit whose checks arrive on Fridays or Saturdays.

I've been using online bill pay for over 10 years.

Social Security has it starting on the first of March that you have to have a debit card or a checking account for direct deposit. No more paper checks. Lizard will not get her check from them anyway because she turned 18 today and the 'child support' checks stops.

Well, I guess this would be a good opportunity to switch to direct deposit. Honestly, though, it would mean that from now on, their checks would arrive on Mondays. In the beginning it might be a little difficult, but after a few weeks, it balances out. I remember once working for a company where I got paid once a month (years before the internet and direct deposit were the norm). I started half way through the month, so my first check was for two weeks but had to last a month. This put me behind for a couple months getting used to it, but after like the second month, the budget was balanced and everything was fine.

So really it would be no different than changing to a new employer who had a different pay day.

The only problem I see is the poor mailman who has to deliver all the weekend packages on Monday during the Christmas holidays.

They're saying that parcels will continue to be delivered 6 days a week.

I think what a lot of people fail to understand is that the postal employees are working at more than delivering your mail. They work shifts, basically 24/7. Mail carriers are just one of the positions.

I realize that you and others know that, but apparently many people seem to think that on days there is no mail delivery or the post office is closed, that no one is working.

ShaharThorne -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 6:54:15 PM)

My brother is a carrier and he works on Saturdays. He is lucky if he gets 40 hours a week, much less 30.

If a certain problem does not get cleared up by August, he will be down to 20 hours.

LafayetteLady -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 6:56:17 PM)

Oh yea, the post office I don't think really hires that many full time employees anymore, if at all.

I knew a woman who was a "part timer" at the post office, but she was able to grab extra work picking up other carriers routes for vacations, sick leave, etc. Maybe your brother can do that.

ShaharThorne -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 6:58:57 PM)

He is like the union rep for the office so he gets a little bit from that.

When one of the gals got injured, he had to do her routes as well. The extra funds went to paying the mortgage down a bit.

littlewonder -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 7:00:50 PM)

If he's a union rep, then I would think his job is probably protected.

ShaharThorne -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 7:06:22 PM)

Yea, he is a vet so that is double security. One guy was to transfer to another office but when they got complaints about him in the new town, they transferred him back. One more fuck up...literally and even the union will drop him.

My brother is praying for him to mess up his probation.

servantforuse -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 7:07:32 PM)

Here in Milwaukee the carriers have to be at a certain house at a certain time. They have a bar code on certain mailboxs for a hand held device. These carriers beat that system by making a copy of the barcode to carry with them. When they are supposed to be at a certain location and they aren't there, no problem.

JeffBC -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/7/2013 10:13:30 PM)

Actually, if I still lived in the US anymore I think I'd be good with them stopping ALL delivery. Really the only thing I remember getting in my mailbox was junk mail. Bills were paid over the internet. Packages were shipped FedEx or UPS. Wait... Carol got one or two magazines and more realistically there were random correspondences that showed up every few months. So maybe once a week would've been optimum for me.

Largely I think the USPS is a way to subsidize business since that's all I ever got.. unsolicited business correspondence.

littlewonder -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/8/2013 1:19:59 PM)

Same here. Once a week would satisfy me. I never get any mail. I don't even buy magazines anymore because they're all online now. There's just no reason.

Now when I worked at the courthouse though, mail was vital. We sent out tens of thousands of dollars of mail out every year. Everyday notices and bills had to go out in the mail. Restraint orders had to be overnighted by USPS to police barracks. So for businesses like this, mail is still a necessity.

playfulotter -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/8/2013 6:06:42 PM)

It won't effect me really....My mail is just downstairs in the lobby in the building I live in but I only check it 3-4 times a week.

Who gives a shit?

Who the hell needs Saturday delivery?

ShaharThorne -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/8/2013 6:24:14 PM)

I do, especially when we mail of Mom's bills. She does not exactly trust computers while I am the 'tech'.

But then I catch her playing Bejeweled 3 when she can't sleep.

Monday's a great day.

The town that the other carrier went to wants my brother for 2 weeks, at full time.

More money for the mortgage!

servantforuse -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/8/2013 7:12:09 PM)

You will just have to mail your moms bills on Friday..

ShaharThorne -> RE: USPS: Saturday mail delivery to end Aug 1st (2/8/2013 7:21:45 PM)

We got the car insurance bill today. Luckily I can mail it out tomorrow instead of Monday.

Meanwhile I am waiting from some books to come in. One of them is from a goodwill store up in Maine.

I have to list my Gor collection tomorrow. When Mom comes back, I have to find a box to mail them with or use one of the priority boxes from the village PO...which is closed on Saturday...
